Navman PIN 300

Thinking about purchasing a Navman PIN 300 primarily for use on the GS. Obviously these items are not designed for sustained outdoor use but I was wondering if anyone knows of any type of waterproof holder that may be available for them?

Navman Pin 300 (aka Mitac Mio 168) can fit inside the RAM-HOl-UN2 .. just. If Brodit (brodit.com) have a cradle then drilll two holes to attach onto a RAM mount, but this is not weatherproof.

For weatherproof cases, then try looking at the Otter box (otterbox.com) which can be attached onto the RAM mount, or, there shall be a RAM weatherproof pod case in approx 8 weeks time.

Thanks for that link, looks like it works really well. What's your general opinion of the PDA type GPS? Most people on here only refer to the Garmin gear. I've used a 2610 and it's a good bit of kit but I sometimes find it a pain. I was searching for Kingfield Avenue, Woking the other day and it just will not have it, gives me lots of other Kingfield but not that one. Also I think the PDA's are a little cheaper. Is it easy enough to obtain maps of France do you know?

Sorry to be a pain with all these questions but I want to make sure I get this right, whatever I do it'll mean spending a fair chunk of dosh!!

i like my pda gps, had it about 6months, used it in the car but only used it on the bike in the otterbox the last 2weeks. i havent had any probs with finding places or map errors, but im sure at somepoint i will come across them, as with most gps i suppose. i am running Destinator 3 on my pda, it came with uk & ireland, but seen as im of to france in may and sept, have just purchased europe software, it has all the countries on it down to street level

i am gonna power it up from the front beak power socket soon so power is no prob, currently the pda will run for around 3-4 hours constantly and the bluetooth reciever will run for 8 hours.
when i bought my pda with uk and ireland maps and bluetooth receiver it cost £330, maps are reletively cheap, all of europe including uk and ireland for £100ish.

here are some map size examples from destinator3;

italy - 185Mb
france - 204Mb
germany - 203Mb
uk & eire - 125Mb
scandinavia - 209Mb
alps - 209Mb
spain - 90Mb
benelux - 80Mb

one thing about destinator maps is if you are travelling across borders you need to purchase Destinator Europe & Major Roads of Europe .

Thanks for all that info and your opinoin on PDA type GPS.

We're off to france in June so I'm hoping to have it sorted by then. One iss ue I can forsee is the Navman has an integral antenna which will not extend within an Otterbox, so not sure what I'll do with that.

Excuse my ignorance but what part does bluetooth play in all this? You mention a bluetooth receiver, the Navman that I've got my eye on appears to receive satelite information direct to its antenna, or is that not the case with PDA type GPS'?

my pda doesnt have a built in antenna like the navman pin 300, so i use bluetooth (which is a wireless connection) to connect to a small reciever that fits in my pocket or somewhere on the bike.

this is what i use to recieve the satelite signals

there is always the bigger otterbox, it will definately fit the nav pin with the antenna raised up, but i think they look a bit too big when mounted on a bike.

It shows a Navman Pin (Mitac Mio) with power lead attached. The RAM parts used were a RAM-B-149Z or RAM-B-149 with a RAM-HOL-UN2 cradle with good results.

Thanks for the link and info. Still pondering on what to do, not sure wether to go the Navman route or the more conventional Garmin way.


Cost is relevant, I haven't got a bottomless pit of money, but at the same time I dont want to end up with something that isn't practical or easy to get mapping for.

Somebody help!! Please!!

The Navman pin has an external aerial connection (solves the box problem). I use the Navman daily as a PDA and as a GPS in the Wifes Car. I have not used it on the bike yet (I know the route into Kensington). the Navman software is good but their Customer service is non existant. Beware if you break the screen your talking £200 plus.

I said before.. that Navman Pin 300 (aka Mitac Mio 168) can fit inside the RAM-HOl-UN2 which is true.

However this update on the pda mount will be of interest if any of you are still wanting to go this route.

The Navman Pin 100, Navman Pin 300 (aka Mitac Mio 168) will fit inside a RAM-HOL-CO3 cradle, though you may have some limitation on port connections etc. Image shown on RAM UK site.
