I hope I've posted this in the right place, it's for the GPS in my car.

I Googled Navteq and came up with Navteq maps free download but as I had to register on the site I didn't go further until asking on here.

I did find out some months ago that the latest version of the DVD, CD, disc, or whatever costs about £150- well, FFS you could buy a new TomTom for less than that. So what is this free download then, surely it can't be the same thing but free? It would have been nice to have the current version last year in France when according to our GPS we were out in the countryside and in the middle of nowhere whereas we were actually on a newly opened motorway, a bit daunting at midnight and trying to get back to our B & B.

Here's what I came up with on the site I mentioned:

Any snags?

At the moment, if you know where to look, you can get just about any software you want free, gratis and for nowt, including new maps for Garmin.
Are you saying that I should look elsewhere, ie somewhere I could get away with it? :augie

No, I wasn't. It's a bit too early to tell how the new bill is going to affect things but it looks a bit like Internet 2 by the back door to me. Ultimately, if there is a serious clamp down I don't think these sites will survive in their present form. There might then be attempts to set up a network of secure servers but......:nenau

Probably better to ask a geek...... :)

Not so free

The T&C's say this at the bottom.

I cant beleive that all the stuff mentioned on the site is easily downloadable and free...(once you've paid up)

Having used software such as Kaza, Limewire etc the download is only half of the challenge. You then have to unzip the files, burn it to cd/dvd with the antipiracy stuff taken out.

I'd love to download Blu-Ray dvd's/PS3 games and CD's to compliment my legitimate collection, but just cant be motivated with the hassle.
