Need a new fan & cooler but which one?

The fan on my processor has given up the ghost and I need to get a new one.

I duly took it down to Maplin's only to find out they didn't have any the correct size and suggested I buy a cooler/fan unit.

The problem is I don't know what I need. There's socket this and socket that so how do I find out what socket my PC is?

It's a PIII 1.3 but as the board was 2nd hand and I didn't install it I've no idea of the make. Looking at the system info I can see it's a "GenuineIntel x86 Family 6 Model 11 Stepping 1" but I can't find anything telling me what socket it is.

Any ideas?

is your PIII a slot 1* or a socket mounted model?

doubt you'll find a cooler anywhere for the former except off another old CPU.

fans on both might well be non standard sizes, so it's either bodge a bigger one on or hunt around on ebay to get an original.

*slot 1 is where the CPU is mounted on a seperate pcb which slots perpendicularly into the motherboard. IIRC PIIIs came in both formats.

Afaics the heat sink thingy is attached directly to the motherboard so I guess that makes it a socket model?

Does that mean I have to look for a socket cooler?

Maybe I'll just gaffer tape a bigger one on

A possibility would be to download & run SisoftSandra. It's a diagnosis tool which can suggest useful upgrades / tweaks. IIR it'll report what your motherboard is. If it doesn't also describe it more fully, just type the motherboard's name into Google to find more info on it from the manufacturer's website. Hope this helps.

Maplins do sell slot 1 heatsinks and fans ... but they are about £20 ... there are still a few left out there like this one from DABSwhich is more like the price to pay ... I think that a lot of the OEM fans were about 50mm and you can get them from loads of places...

Seriously though, you're having more and more problems.......bin that old bit of junk, spend under 300 notes on a new one and it'll wipe the floor with what you've been used to

Oi my PC is not even 6 years old yet. I only stopped using my Win 3.1 PC 6 months ago

The last time I bought a new PC the bloody thing stopped working due to driver problems anyway and cost me a fortune getting it back to a working state so I think I'm no worse off with what I've got. I just avoid putting any new stuff on it which is OK. £20 for a new fan & cooler should sort me out for another year or so. Just call me scrooge

And anuvver fing. What I use this old heap of poop for is for music composition. If I get a feck off P4 processor that's gonna need a serious fan to keep it cool and I can't have the background noise. What I do at the moment is disconnect the fan when I'm recording (probably why it's fecked now) but if I did that with a P4 the thing would probably overheat before I'd finished one song.
