Need some advice

... If it's all road BT020, brilliant and confidence inspiring wet or dry. Big :thumb2

... 'Hybrid' - Tourrances are durable and do warn you when they're getting itchy, I also liked the Dunlop 607s , but for the road go with a set of 020s.

Metzeler Tourance's had them on my transalp..........i have no intention of ridin anywhere but on the road......so think i will try road attack...for a change.....:thumb2

Let me know how you get on with the road attacks.
I did the ring earlier this year in the wet and my Tourances were superb.
I had one little slip (felt like half a mile!) going round Adenau Forst but I think it was the tyres letting me know that I was going fast enough. (Never really understood feedback!)
After that fantastic. So much so that I pulled in to the car park at the end and got another lap.
This caused some strange looks from the power rangers who were hiding under anything they could to get out of the rain. :D

Interested to see how the attacks are.

Off to the Dales in a bit to test the Tourances some more with a mate on a Ulyses.

Andy

I would have said tourances, but having been on Conti Trail Attacks for the last 2 months and done 3000 miles on them in all weathers my vote goes to these. To me they beat the tourances for wet and dry grip, and I've used tourances for the last 5 years.
After 3000 miles they hardly look worn

just did last weekend up in the lakes on the battle wings.....love the road up to hartside cafe...still makes me jump everytime i scrap me engine bars..lol enjoyed all the roads we did even in the fog on saturday morning.....went down hawes and made a few power rangers jump as i went passed em...they seem very good in a straight line not so hot round the twisties....
tyres never let me down......just want to see what the road attacks are like...
i love the sticky tryes i have on me dr400sm...........and fancy something like for me gs..........:thumb2

Tyres tyres tyres

Hi

I'm new to the list so hello to everyone and excuse any dumb questions etc.

I had a set of square continental escapes which were poor, then I had a set of Anakees which were a vast improvement, then a set of bridgestone 020's which were another giant leap forward. I'm now deciding between a set of 021's or some continental road attacks or the Avon storm ST

has anyone got first hand experience of how these tyres compare?

I print Bike (also RiDE, Perf Bike and fast Bike) and have looked at the issue with the tyre test, the Avons came out top on track, closely followed by road attacks then 020's.

much obliged

Avon's....maybe

Hi

I am using 020 front and 021 rear, previously had 020's front and rear. Both great sets of tyres. Can't say i noticed a great deal of difference in handling with the 021 rear, i reckon you'd need 021 front to feel a difference (quicker steering more precise ect). Unfortunatley Bridgestone dont produce an 021 for the front at the moment.
Which brings me onto my next set of tyres i'd like to try Avon Storm ST's, unfortunatley ditto dont produce Storm ST for the front yet....I've contacted both manufacturers about this and both seem to think it wont be long before they do due to popular demand of both tyres in that size.
A mate of mine runs an Avon Azzaro Front and Storm ST rear (same as bike magazine tested) and thinks there fantastic both wet and dry....My next choice me thinks.....

While i was waiting today for new tyres on me merc.........i got talkin to the feller there.... about what would be suitable for me gs..............as a road tyre and he said pilot road 2 would be a good choice.........comments please gentlemen what do you think???????

Had the Pilot Road 2 on my F800. They gave a comfortable ride and had good grip. How they would hold up on a GS, I can only speculate. Will probably get a set of Metzelers, as soon as the gsa is done with the factory fitted tires.

I've run many sets of anakees and despite what all the magazines say, never had any problem with them and could keep up with traffic, so to speak, they did get a little lively now and again but never dangerous. I thought I'd try something different from the tonka toy style tyres so went for Bridgestone 020 front/ 021 rear. Thoughts....rear seems great but the front is so stable that the bike doesn't turn in nearly as good as on the anakees, Even jacking it right up at the rear doesn't really help!! Overall though these tyres are smoother and way more stable than the anakees, I just have to countersteer a wee bit harder now. I have tried battlewings on another GS and these feel more like the 020s than anakees so I suspect that they are on the same carcass. I'll probably stick with the 020/1 at the next change....at which point they may have an 021 front out which hopefully will turn a bit quicker. Looking at the other posts, looks like you'll find it hard to put a bad set of tyres on the GS!!

Pilot Road II's - brilliant, loads of grip wet and dry and lasting forever. The rear has done 12000+(!) and only now needs changing as it's started to white-line, though still 4mm tread left! I'd normally get about 9000m max from an Anakee for comparison.

My 1200GS came new with Dunlop D607's - they performed just fine.

For a change I then tried Tourances - they are good but once even slightly squared off they feel horrible at low speeds around town; rear often felt as if it was under-inflated (it wasn't), other than this they are pretty good and last well.

Because of the weird low speed feel I have now gone back to the D607's - I don't think that will last as long, but on balance I agree with Bike magazine they perform that little bit better than the Tourance.

trial attacks, same as road attacks, but look better and more rubber

Tourance - no right to be so good!

I used to swear by Bridgestone 020/010 untill a mate persuaded me to try pilot roads. They were a huge leap forward in wet grip & feel. Top tyres. However, since I got the GS I have been using tourances and I'm amazed at how much feedback and confidence they give, wet or dry. Their limits are beyond mine :o
Ride with confidence and most modern tyres should be fine unless you are Rossi :D

After much research Continental Road Attack are what I have settled for.
Very impressed with them in dry and wet.:clap

I was going for Road Pilot 2 however can't get front tyre in 1150GS size.
Maybe try them next year if Michelin get round to making that size.

That is the Bike article that made me cancel my subscription. Half-assed muppets.

Why do bike journo's insist on running tyres below the recommended pressures, and for a tyre comparison test of all things?

....Tyres are very much a personal thing... and influnced very much by the riders own perceptions and experiences... i.e. one small slip (say on a greasy road).. may dowse a riders previous confidence in a particular make of tyre . I agree. Tyres are improving all the time and I don't think that there can be a great difference between ANY of the makes APPROVED for the GS. I know that my Touraces are very solid feeling, wet or dry, whether on my poor local roads or on the autoroute; I feel that I would have to do somethng quite stupid to test their limits, either cornering or braking.

Scraping the engine bars !!!!!

You scrape your engine bars? Bloody hell, you don't need my advice about tyres 'cos there's no way I use them as hard as you do! :bow

:D
I suppose it depends on which type of bars you have fitted and, of course what they are scraped against - eg passing Volvos etc.
