need to edit a PDF file

I think distiller creates pdf's, you need Adobe Acrobat 6.0 to edit, but really it means mark-up, not edit.

Acrobat Writer is what you need, The freebie Acrobat Reader doesn't edit

PDF files are not meant to be edited. The full blown Acrobat package will let you do some minor editing IF the pdf file was created from Word or some similar program. It will also let you save as a Word or RTF document for editing if not protected. If it's a scanned file converted to pdf you have no chance as it's really just a large picture.
