Negative Aspects from First Rides

That is a big 'off'. Good that the rider was OKish. Swing arm was shattered. Amazed it was still attached?

Tarmac will remain my off road territory:eek:

I realise Girder forks are like that. I thought the arc that the telelever prescribes keeps the wheelbase static, unlike normal tele's that shorten the wheelbase under braking.

Don't know why I thought that. I guess I'm wrong :bow

If the sliding forks compress then the front wheel must move closer to the rear wheel, as it moves up it is moving backwards.........yes. So the wheel base shortens. The telelever seperates the braking force from the steering force, why?, because it does and it says so in the BMW brochure:D

It was pure speculation that 'gizmo stuff' was at fault, but two journo's scared shitless and one killed whilst riding them does raise a few questions:augie

New WC owner " Its trying to kill me!"
Dealer "Yes Sir they all do that its normal, its part of the character of the bike"

Bike Magazine's write up on the new wc found that their bike went into a wild tank slapper breaking off both steering stops .They gave it 4 stars because of these stability issues . It will be interesting to see how it performs on the UK launch , or on a test ride from next weekend .

whats the problem:nenau

think on the positive side , the LC riders will be labled the same as the old TL riders :thumb2

you will be regarded as men of steel with giant Titainium Cajones and sexy women will fall at your feet its a win win :pullface

Seems that the current 12GS does that as well :augie

thats a fookin big shunt :eek and lets face it they were ramping it up a bit :beerjug:

The wheel moves vertically (slightly curved) as this animation shows.

Just been fortunate enough to have spent the day riding about 200k around Morrocco on the new bike along with umpteen others. I've done plenty of offroad with my 2007GS but riding the new one with gizmos allowed it to make mincemeat of situations that I'd have struggled with on mine. The "A" team we certainly pushing the bikes to the limits and no one encountered any worrying behaviour. If you like the old one I reckon you're gonna love this.

Hooray, at last, some positivity:comfort:D

It may seem that I have been a bit negative in a couple of postings, but I was just 'having a bit o fun'.
I think its a nice bike. Looks miles better than the previous 12, and looking at that animation Fanum posted, quite inovative.
I just mentioned that because I'm going to comment about it again.... even though I will never have one, so really shouldn't try spoil it for others.
But ...
Nobody has mentioned the guy from Adventure bike riders forum/magazine, Alun, who was (as far as I read) quite badly injured when he crashed one and has not wrote a single word on his forum about the circumstances as far as I know . Strange for a journalist dont you think

No sign, mention or talk of "Tank Slappers" or "Instability"on any GS forum in Germany(by far the biggest GS market). Perhaps problems occur only on the Right hand drive models :hide

He has been mentioned but in another thread, but yes, I agree, most odd for a journalist to keep his lips 'totally' sealed.

I haven't read Bike magazine for years but they tend to favour KTM over the GS (suspect this is driven by advertising) so it comes as no surprise.

If you experience a tank slapper off road is it the fault of the bike or the rider - or maybe just an unfortunate set of circumstances ?

If it happens on road it's another matter.

I'm pretty sure that Alun's accident was connected to the Kevin Ash accident - which is still being investigated by the SA police - so it's probably legal issues that are keeping things quiet on that front.
