everybody i've ever spoken to on the subject has told me that truing a bmw wheel is not possible. they are not like normal spoked wheels at all.

y? wots the difference, the spokes going to the outer edge of the rim?

I think the reason they're not as hot on the later model is the switch to an aluminium handlebar instead of steel which prevents them from getting as warm.

Are the heated grips on a timer or have a cutout? not used them much but wasnt sure if the temparature was fluctuating slightly?

It seems with the 1200GS DOHC that you either get a good one or you don't, it's the luck of the draw. One bike will go on forever without missing a beat and another will be back to the dealer with every fault imaginable, there is definitely a real problem with BMWs quality control.

Bike leans too far and foot too small.
Cured by a big foot. Should not have to fit it though.
Rest of the bike (Oct 2011) is GREAT

Due to their design, They need to be assembled and tensioned on a jig. No adjustment is possible after removal from the jig. If its wrong, the process is started again from scratch.

Info obtained from a couple of the only places in the country that will work on them.

Dropped them into today at Premier Bikes at Askern nr Doncaster. I've had a couple of New bikes from there in the past, both Kawasaki's and always had them serviced there.

Steve the Mechanic really knows his onions, and apparently is a very good wheel builder.

He checked both wheels whilst I was there and he confirmed that the front was around 3mm out and could certainly do something with it. He struggled with the rear because of its single sided design, albeit he's gonna have go at finding a spindle adapter.

I'll be collecting at the weekend and report back

Thanks MY, will wait for your report - hope it is favorable despite what others are saying re difficulty in trueimg. It seems incredible that it would not be possible to sort out

hagons took mine in and explained why they are not true . its because when the rim is a laid out straight track that is then rolled to form the rim its welded together off bonk . and no amount of tweaking will make it any better maybe wosre and these are proffesional wheel builders . he also said bmw get these made on machine there not checked just shod with a tyre and bolted on . just call it character like i do lol

Think the heated grips are on all the time in the max (2 dot) position then thermostat when in the 1 dot position, the manual says they are also controlled by the air/ambiant sensor as well in position 1. So guess if the air temp is what it thinks is warm! it will switch off the grips. On mine if hands cold with position 1 just flip up to 2 till I feel hot then back again to keep snug.
Both our 09 GSs have been great done approx 21000 miles each. Sues lowered one needed a new rear shock at 17000 miles and we have gone through 3 head lamp bulbs, no real corrosion but i do suffer from OBC (obssesive bike cleaning) Both fuel guage tank units have been replaced but are still a bit temperamental. Still love the bikes though, Sue would kill me if I tried to sell hers. Both bike seem to be getting better the more we use them, by the time we get to 100000 should be perfect.
Must admit I still miss my old 1150GSA had lots of problems, oil leaks, injectors, coils etc but in 50 odd thousand miles never left me stranded, even got back from Switzerland with a slipping clutch (oilsoaked) tears when it went

Yep you are spot on. The guy at premier bikes can't do anything about them. Like you say it needs a jig.

He has found a wheel builder in Deven - CMF wheels & The Devon Rim company. They recon that they are one of only a people in the country who can straighten BMW wheels. The regularly do rebuilds and provide new spokes. Had agood chat with them, them seem to really know their stuff ( I said that about my chap at premier) They also recon that older BMW wheels were fine, it's the 1200's that suffers with this.

I have tried to just get on ride the thing and put it down to 'Character' but I can feel it through the bars and its spoiling what is an oustanding Bike.

Might just give em a go.

I'm trying to be 'mellow' about the whole thing too!
My worry was a: will it/is it getting worse?
and b: will it become an MOT issue?, last tester ran the handle of his screwdriver round the spokes in a glockenspiel fashion so unless he is a wannabe musical savante, he must have been checking them (maybe just tension and not rim alignment?

Ride it and forget about it I reckon
