I was talking with a friend this week who reckons you can buy a hard drive that will sit on your lan and can be accessed by any other machine on the network.
Has any one come accross one of these items and if so where can I get one?

The way it was described was a large drive that just plugged in to the lan and could be accessed via mapping a drive to it. No pc involved to drive it. I'm looking to have a central drive on my home network to share common files and music.

Andrew.

Hi Andy.

Just do a Google on "network ethernet drive" or "network hard drive" and you'll find more options than you can shake a dead cat at.

I tried a Netgear one, it's dog slow, but was only £43 without drive, takes normal IDE disks. To get any sensible level of performance I guess you need to spend rather more.

I've got one of these on my home network.

Can be mapped to each PC with it's own directory plus public directories etc. I've copied all my music, pics etc to this drive for quick and easy access. Works a treat and plenty quick enough.

HTH

Adam :)
