New '07 12GS - Imperative Mods?

Hi everyone, I'm a long time rider of big jap tourers/sports bikes and have recently bought (but not picked up yet) a brand new "07 1200GS. Having perused this site for a while I am left wondering with the plethora of mods you guys seem to do to your bikes, are there any things that I should do to mine straight out of the box? Or are they (1200GS) generally reliable? It seems to me that you guys love fiddling with and modifying your bikes as much as riding them. Any "must do" mods would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like my reply will be the first and it is a serious one! My bike does have a few goodies but if I had to choose two it would be the Sargent seat and the Zumo in that order.

Agreed with Shenzi change the stock seat, some like it alot don't the more miles you cover the less you are likely to enjoy its German comfort

Alot of people might say, trade it in for an 1150
but I wouldn't, I tested a 1200GSA yesterday
hopefully my next steed, when they are at about £5000
give it another 5 years

HID dipped and main beam

Thanks Digger, i'm sure "feckin ride it" is great advice. It's just that I've read a lot of the forums and people tell stories of all kinds of faults at their first or second service and I'd like to avoid them if possible as I've six weeks in Europe this summer on the thing.

Look in the south section you'll see they are trying to arrange another ride out there are quite a few ADV's so you could see whats what in person and chat to owners etc.,

He'll hook you up with an HiD kit. The single best mod I've made to my bike.

My Sargent seats easily come second though.

Go back and swap it for a 05 1150 GSA SE! Best mod you can do to the bike

It's not so much that the original seat is uncomfortable, I've had worse, more that the Sargent is the best seat I have ever had. Seats are a very personal thing though, someone is recommending the Wonderlich Ergo, I tried one and thought it was awful so try a few before you buy if you can. Put a few miles on with the original first though.
The Zumo is the latest Garmin GPS specifically made for bikes and for my money the best out there.
Be aware though that some of us enjoy throwing money at our bikes, I didn't list all the bollox I have on mine

Not sure why you would recommend a second rate product

Went out with Rapid Training after reading much praise about them in the press and a work colleague had used them. They guy was good .. better than an IAM observer .. but he was no where near as good as Mike Waite or one of his students that taught me.

The difference. Mike really teaches you whilst you are riding. The Rapid guys are all quiet during the ride and "review" the ride after you've done it at a cafe. The way Mike can accelerate your abilities can be clearly seen in my riding. He does live commentary throughout the ride (apart from the initial slient ride when you first meet .. where he assesses you). This could be down to the fact that Mike was an INSTRUCTOR in the police rather than just a qualified rider

I am going to use one of his students later this year. Hopefully before the Italy trip .. so I can really enjoy those passes.

Modifications needed? Very few really, sat nav and decent panniers would be my only 'must have purchases' at the start and the sat nav is not really that necessary IMO.

No cost mods for me would be to remove the little rubber inserts in the foot rests (they just pull out) and i'd drill a small hole in the lh hand guard to allow water to drain out when its parked on the sidestand.

Then just allow the bike to develop around you, fitting what you think is nessesary only when you need it
