I'm foxed by a decision. To buy new or second hand, my thoughts are as follows:

New
Pro's
Shiney and new, you know exactly what happened to it
You get to choose your exact spec
You know it's been bedded in correctly

Cons
Costs
Lead time on a delivery

Second Hand
Pretty much the inverse of the above, and you may get a few nice bolt on's too like a top box or after-market exhaust.

So I'd welcome any advice from the experts:rolleyes:

Go by your heart........listen to it and you won't go wrong......

Bikes for most of us come with deep rooted feelings........so find a really nice secondhand machine with extras at the right price in a dealership, then test ride it back to back with a new one and see which one tugs you most......simple.

FWIW, you'd have to be a total cnut to wreck a boxer engine whilst running it in....so that wouldn't worry me unduly....and you only have to look through the pics here to see that some of our number have bikes that look cleaner and nicer than they did as new.

I bought a new Adv because it's a keeper for me and I wanted her to be mine all mine......but if I were bikeless now, I'd happily look at good s/h models as long as they were minters with some appropriate kit on.

New or Secondhand

I have never bought new, I always buy secondhand you save a pile, and avoid buying of a dealer look in the private adds. If a bike is relatively new it will come with a manufacturers warrantee anyway. A new GS has 2 years warrantee, so if your changing your bike look for something thats less than 12 month old and for sale privately, you will get a better deal than from a dealer, and they will still have to honour any warrantee thats still outstanding
