Symptom as follows: bike accelerates quite smoothly up to about 4.5-5K then it starts to lurch exactly as if it were stalling then firing again. Unfortunately it is most evident at large throttle openings i.e. when going for overtakes!
Bike has been back to SPC for a second check-up - problem has not yet been diagnosed so it needs to go back for a more thorough check involving swapping of bits to identify the fault.
Anyone had similar problems? Bike has done under 2K miles, its pretty standard except for a Datatool alarm (1st time I've had an alarm fitted!).
Still had a great ride in the sometimes sun today - I love winter biking on days like these
disconect the alarm and see if the problem still excists
as a 4WD machanic i see a lot of problems like that with 4WD
as owners of them seem to like fitting all kinds of aftermarked crap on then, it sometimes can cause problems to the way the shit heaps run
At last the solution has been found, not the alarm which was my prime suspect, but too much air - something I am sure we all suffer from occasionally
SPC had it for a week whilst I was away, and diagnosed after much head scratching and part swapping that there was too much air in the mix causing it to do the stuttering thing at wide throttle openings.
It is now running like a dream, stacks of punch and delivering the performance I was expecting. Happy Cleverly.
Except for one thing, surely this shouldn't happen on a 8K motorbike from the self proclaimed 'BMW - Ultimate Driving Machines'?
I know GSer's pride themselves on overcoming the idosyncrosies of these steeds but are we not being taken for a bit of a ride here(sic)?
Hmm, got a similar response when I first mentioned it at SPC, 'have you ridden a twin before sir, they aren't like Japanese fours'
Now I don't claim to be an expert on the internal combustion engine, but the last time I had something that ran as rough as the BMW pre-fix was a ex-national rally (my dads) Mini Cooper S, 998, with a stage 3 tune and a cherry bomb pipe. Somehow if you have twatted around with cams, carbs and exhaust to that extent you do expect some slightly peaky performance. A standard GS straight from the box however.........
