Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
Out here in the south west I have a wireless connection to broadband to the gable end of my house then a wire to a wireless router.

1MBIT up and down so quite handy. But my son can not connect to MSN and I cannot get info for itunes and or mapsource.

I can surf the net with mozzila and I can download mail with outlook.

Port problem or what. I connected directly without the router but same problem.

Spyke seems to work fine.

XP SP1..... And I don't really think I need sp2. Last thing is if I reconnect with a phone line it works. Go figure.....

Firstly, you DO need SP2 as it contains various drivers and security updates.

Secondly, it sounds as if your phone wiring may be incorrect. Do you have a 'master socket' in the house, and is it like THIS illustration ?

If so, try connecting to the master socket within this, it looks like the faceplate is split horizontally with 2 screws holding the lower bit on. Once this is removed, you can see there's a socket behind it. Plug your modem/router into this and see if it makes any difference. If so, the extension socket/s are probably wrongly wired (see diagrams).

Seem to have solved the problem by removing the check next to "use proxy server" bla bla bla in the internet options.

Windows live messenger now works. As well as Itunes. The only thing that does not seem to work is the check for updates using mapsource 6.5

Richie....centaur's right about the sp2 update...for one thing it'll cure any potential USB problems (previously, USB2 support was really dodgy in XP) and there are a whole load of updates that will help protect your system.....If you don't have a totally legit copy of Windows though, make sure you do the manual update and select the updates to aply.....DO NOT get the WGA update and make sure you tick 'do not ask me about this update again' box ;)

Long time no see BTW...how the devil are ye sir?? :)

For once I do have a legit copy of windows. So when I ask for the update can I just let it do it on its own or should I do a custom setup and remove some of the options.

My PC works fine btw so I never got round to updating.

I / We are fine. West Cork is a great place to be. No bike at the moment but lots of diving instead. Hope to head off to Asia in November but a looming last english tax bill is awaiting payment :(
