New Chain and Anti Pinch Pin

Cheers chaps! although almax didnt really rate the pinch pin i think its better than going through the back wheel with a chain, as the wheel can be removed. I'll order the 290mm one.

Would it not be better to have the pinchpin through the frame rather than the hub?

It will make it much more difficult to get to with a grinder and well more substantial item to which the pin is attached?

They do sell longer pinch pins to enable you to do just that. You just need to find a suitable place on the frame that doesn't allow the head of the pin to pass through.

Looking at security options for my new GSA, think I will go for the pragmasis set up, but that's OK at home, but what does everyone else recommend for travelling? Do you use the same? How do you carry it?

I don't want to run with boxes on the bike just to carry a chain, does anybody have recommendations for carrying chain etc fitted somewhere on the bike?

Carried my pragmasis chain and pin to Russia due to lack of theft cover helped me sleep at night.

In Europe it's a disc lock plus connecting cable and my Oxford xl hardcore plus a tatty bike cover.

Carried in my Kriega us30

Look at your bike.

Look at what you want to carry by way of luggage and pillion, if any.

Look at it again with a chain in your hands.

You'll work it out, I'm sure.

PS The trick, if there is one, is take something that is easy, quick and practicable to use. If it isn't you won't use it, trust me. I take a very simple Abus cable lock, with a combination lock rather than a key. Why a combination lock? Because I don't want yet another key to (possibly) lose. Will it stop a determined fellon? No but I don't think the whole world is full of determined fellons. Wherever possible I run the cable around or through something, to a act as an anchor rather than just looping it through a wheel. I also keep a pound of butter in the fridge. Either or both methods have worked so far, so - arguably - they have been just as effective as 50 kg of chain or indeed, maybe nothing; who can tell?

I do have a plastic coated steel cable with looped ends which be passed around a post, through itself and one end can be fed through the hub and when padlocked can't be pulled back out.
It seems to be the best bet particularly as it can be easily fitted in a bag, it's just that I'm used to my ZRX which has a huge underseat compartment which holds chain, padlock, tools, puncture kit, spare gloves butter etc etc.

The 290mm pinch pin, padlock and 1.5m chain i got fit perfectly in a Kriega US10, which i tie on the back if i don't have the box on or use another bike.

Travelling Security

When travellling with my F800GS through Mongolia and Siberia I used an alarmed Xena disc lock on the rear and an alarmed Oxford boss disc lock on the front with a plastic covered cable to lock to a stationary object. When I stealth/wild camped I also use the cable on a duffel bag in the tent so if someone tries a push away it'll wake me up. However the most important element in my experience is a good bike cover, out of sight is out of mind.

For the home I have an Almax chain, Squire lock, Pragmasis anti-pinch pin and a Hardie ground anchor, plus the above (-the cable) but I rarely used it all on the F800GS at home. I now have a 2014 R1200 GSA LC... but I'm not sure I would feel as confident leaving this expensive toy, either at home or when travelling without the Almax-Squire-Pragmasis home security set up (- the ground anchor). But I would absolutely still use the cover!

I have used the Almax+Squire in a Kriega US10... but it was seriously heavy with all my other travel gear for long-solo-overland adventures. But with the Pragmasis you could use a shorter and thus less heavy chain which makes it a bit more travel friendly and still use the kriega US10 on the back seat.
