I'm in the market for a new computer and I want a fairly high-end spec so that I can use it for gaming as well as serious stuff :augie

I had an order in with Evesham for a Quad-core, 8800GTX jobbie, but they are having trouble with suppliers. I bet they are - a bit of Googling suggests that they're about to go belly-up. So I've cancelled the order.

Thing is, who should I order from now? And what should I order? Any advice much appreciated. :thumb2

Cheers

Why go for a quad core co-pro when there is very little software writen for dual core never mind quad, why not build your own, it isnt hard and you get the spec you want.

I take the point about quad core, but I'm thinking future-proofing: with quad core processors set to become the norm pretty soon, I'm guessing that more and more multithreaded (is that right?) software will become available. But is that a load of bollocks  I'm more than happy to be guided to a cheaper option :thumb2

As for building my own, the plugging it all together bit doesn't phase me, but dealing with any problems does! I was talking to a guy yesterday who has just built his own machine and he's got an incompatibility between the graphics card and the motherboard. He upgraded to the latest drivers, etc., but it still isn't right. That kind of thing would drive me bananas! Also, at the end of the day, I don't know if I could buy the bits for any less than a retailer can build a whole system for.

Thanks for the thoughts :thumb2

Ain't no such thing as 'future proofing'. Best bet is to settle for the best spec at the most reasonable price/quality/reliability/service etc........good luck in your search.....could be fun, or drive you bananas ! :blast :D

Like i said mulit core isnt really out yet and thats 2 years down the line from the co-pro's being released, so you will have to wait quite a while for quad core to come out, in software that is.
