New Fangled Autocomm jobbie.....

I've just ordered an autocom..the whole kaboodle, minus the kenwood pmr which i can get 50 quid cheaper.....

The problem is finding a spare, easily accessible and clean ignition switched live and earth..... (i've been advised the accessory socket is no good 'cos it'll cause noise and also cos its obviously live permanently) .

The 'normal one' has been well and truly tapped into for the lights and the multiple relays my silly OTT setup has required (and the SPIII power feed), so i'm looking for another one and TBH the woring scares me a little after going through all the stories of abs systems throwing up dodgy error messages etc etc.
Autocom themselves reckon the rearlights are the best bet but for the above reason that sounds iffy to me......

anyone else got any ideas?

Secondly, ideally i need a place to stick the autocom (pro 7) and the Kenwood talkie walkie ridie.......the space under the fuse/relay box is well and truly used up.....i do have a big tank bag but i don't really want to use half the space up and dont want to trail wires alover the place to it.

One thing i've thought of doing is cutting out one or two of the moulded cross pieces from the underneath of the seat and velcroing the autocom there...not ideal for when lifting the seat but a possibility.

PS there's also the VOX/PTT to route up to the bars.

If you want to ride round to Orpington & take a look at my bike, you're more than welcome. I've got the Autocom wired in at the back end of the bike (done by Coopers of Reading), so you can see where to tap into yours.Plus, I'll show you where I store the Autocom unit at the back of the fuel tank.

Oi Fanum ya lazy fekka use the search tool!!

Oh alright then Pro7 will fit quite happily between battery and air sensor in the cavity at the back of the tank, front of the seat.

My power is taken from the brakelight feed but there is a better option up under the tank which will mean your Autocom will be powered at all times except when the ignition is off (but maybe thats what you mean by the normal one - Doh!) in which case brake light feed.

B2B radio should ideally be away from electicial interfernce as possible I recommend your tank bag of you have one or in your pocket. Definately NOT where I'm suggesting your Autocom go.

Of course you could just ride up to Warwick, put on your best overwhelmed face and drink their coffee while they do it all for you. That worked for me

The fuel tank gap seems to be the only space left but judt from looking at it i don't think it'll fit a kenwood talkie walkie as well..what do you use?

( i can't see me ever wanting to use the thing away from the bike and i'd rather leave it on the beast and hidden away with plug in points sensibly available)

The wiring is certainly the first thing to overcome though.....if i need to I can run with the kenwood in the tank bag.

I think you will find that Autocom units switch themselves of when you disconnect the head set.

Ta Greg....but mine's an Adv so i've got no toolbox or space there.....the tool roll is stuck up under the seat and tied on so that's a no go....


And Judge....that is indeed the 'normal' feed I'm talking about, hence why I need another supply (apparently it has got to be switched Roger..I don't know if it does turn itself off or not but thats what Doug at Autocom said so i presume there is some sort of current draw even if it's not used)

Taking a supply from the back end might be a problem....the route past the airbox and frame is stuffed with half a dozen insulated cables already from the light setup....we had a bit of a job getting the last in there as it was.......

Was in exactly the same position as you. However I asked Rob Farmer to have a look at it when he fitted my lights (I believe you turned up later the same day - did you get wet too?). 15mins later and after much spinning of wire strippers other arcane tools and incantations of electrical terms the thing was wired in. Haven't got a clue what Rob did but I do know he was careful not to connect it with anything to do with the abs system. Have a word with Rob, he'll probably be able to remember what he connected it to and talk you through it.

There is, enough to kill the battery in a week of non-use. This was when it was originally powered off the back of the accessory socket.
