New Garmin 590lm just arrived in the post.....

Using the 590 looks more intuitive than the Nav V to me. The shortcuts down the righthand side of the screen when you use the search button is neat. Does that exist on the Nav V?

Presumably, different software will mean it won't interface with the wurly-wheel on the latest GS's.

Mean bugg@rs not including a case!

+1, thanks for the write-up.

Until recently I had my 660 plumbed into my Autocom via hard-wire isolated cable. I have just installed a BT02 Bluetooth module which works well and also allows the use of my phone through the Zumo. Whilst certainly not a 'must have' bieng able to pull over and call someone with out removing my lid, phone-book transfers to Zumo on pairing, is handy. Means that if someone calls whilst I'm riding I can see who it is. This would work with the Nav5 or 590.

To be honest Bump I like wires I can fix them, no batteries to worry about and with our size bikes plenty of room to put them. Also I think on the k when it arrives it has iPhone prep so just plug straight into audio, not that I ever would.

Screen in sunlight extremely good. USB not just a charger.

I have one on a second bike and the screen is in a different league to the Nav 4. The brighter the sun the clearer the screen. Has to be seen to be believed. The wiring harness is a pig. I actually ran the USB back up behind the cradle unit and the audio out back up to nearby. The remainder I bagged up and wrapped and concealed inside the fairing. A handlebar bag on a GS would be an ideal place to hide it. I then ran a feed from my Fuzeblock to the bag of cables. Now I have the option of plugging my iPhone into the USB which means I do not have to link it to the 590 by bluetooth. This means I still have Siri control of my iPhone via my SMH-10 to make calls if needed. The USB socket is not just power only. I have the speed cam app linked via the Smartlink to the iPhone. The alerts work well and are pretty accurate. I understand the idea is that it is a live and constant update for a one off lifetime fee. The second option I have is to use the audio out to my SR10 when using a two way radio. Then the output of the 590 comes through in the background.

Hiya

I'm thinking about one of these. Could you tell me if it displays campsites (in Europe)? Are these listed as POI?

Also, I need to upload .gpx files to it which will come from motogoloco route planning site. Does it support this?

Any help appreciated.

Garmin std mapping data has some campsites. However, I suggest that you load Archies Camping data onto the unit using POI Loader. Over 30,000 campsites across Europe, it seems like wherever you go one is only a few miles away at most.

Thanks cafe for all the info very useful, means the Garmin cradle is far more useful with autocom than the Nav 5.

I assume you are using something like autocom as you don't have BT headset

No BT - I use earbuds connected to the audio out jack

Does it have the big speedo screen?

This is all you get - accessed by tapping the speed box on the map screen

Two more videos to follow - one as a guide to the apps, one as a guide to the settings

It seems very similar in function and operation to the Nav V, though the V does not have the 'sound out' function, being only Bluetooth.

Its simple cradle is the same as the basic 660 and Nav IV and Nav V versions, ie. only lacking the buttons. These are reasonably plentiful secondhand or via eBay, which should dampen the 'It's a rip off' cries.

The device (probably) won't interact fully with BMW's iWheel thing.

The Nav V does not have the app to interface with Garmin's own video camera; useful only if you have the camera of course.

Both devices run Garmin's 'Smart link' to iPhone.

Both devices have their merits, price will probably be the key decider.

Looks to me like Garmin's own version of the BMW Nav V but with a different casing! Looking at the rear view, the battery compartment, on/off button, flap for USB all in the same place.

The 590 is bigger than the 660 and the 590 won't fit in a 660 cradle. New m/cycle mounts are about £42 which seems reasonable to me but I can't find anyone selling the cradle weather caps.
