seen lots of links to webpages that claim to unlock G maps when they shouldn't be (ie not paid for) I'm sure no-one on here has done that but also certain that the collective will have an opinion or two!

Me?, I'm happy with the existing 2011 update on my 500 but do get a little annoyed that because that was a downloaded (presumably, was done before I bought it) update, it does not appear on the Mapsource which I think is a 2008 version!
Seems daft to only be able to preplan on 2008 then venture forth with 2011 which could be rather different - any thoughts?

In the past it was one update a year and at £70 odd a pop. Now you can lifetime (life of the GPS mind) for about £50 it makes trying to hack the Garmin unlock not worth bothering with in the long run. OK £50 is £50 but most of us spend far more on other bits for our bikes. I think Garmin realised this and decided on a compromise on the price.

You could either try Basecamp, which I think can read the mapping from the GPS (so I'm lead to believe) or do your planning in ITN Converter with it's Google mapping which should be pretty current.

Dead right 50 nicker is good value if for lifetime, I have basecamp so will have a deeper look at it, you might be right - still shame about Mapsource given the time invested in (trying to) understand it.

After having issues with my 550, I sent it to garmin for repair last week.
But as with most Zumo repairs recently, they exchanged it for a 660 and charged me the standard £111+....... I received it today via UPS.
however after logging onto the garmin website I discovered that they did transfer my lifetime map updates to the new unit
I figure on recouping some of the £111 by flogging the remaining 550 parts (bike/car cradles, chargers etc) on evilbay. Especially as I've got to invest in a new CAB66 cable for my starcom to replace the CAB55 item I had for the 550

i have not paid for an update for many years, within 1 or 2 days of an update being released its on many sites on the net, main being gpsunderground, but there are thousand of others. download the file, put it on a sd card and done. no messing about with key generators or unlockers etc.

since then i thought "bugger you" and have openly downloaded the software.

the unlocked maps are for free BTW, if a site is charging for it then stay away.

I recently received a new 660 as a replacement for my damaged 550, that I sent to Garmin for repair, Garmin swapped over the lifetime maps and updated my registration details on their website.

Excellent service I thought.

Had a problem with my 2820,they transferred my lifetime map update to my new 660 over the phone.

With the latest maps download I installed new software that checks for updates.

This works on Vista but not on my XP laptop so had to download manually to that. Spent ages working that one out.

Cogs,
Tried twice got to final install maps left machine running o/night . Nothing. Removed and reinstalled Garmin updater. Tried again twice same problem.
Removed lifetime updater and did a manual install took 2 hours. Searched the net for solution. Nothing that helpful
For me apart from time - Im just pleased it came through manually.

Whatever works for you...

Must admit, I wasn't that impressed with the new system. I'd just got used to the previous one, checking the right box to get both PC and device updated, and they go and change it so I missed that step! Now got new on Zumo, 'old' on desktop. I'll wait for next upgrade before I correct Very crowded (only 40GB) hard disc...

Did you get the whole of Europe on with the old method? - I tried the mac updater and it pulled everything then moaned there wasn't enough space. I've got Western Europe on now, which is all I need, but tons of space.

Maybe it'll work better though, load quicker and crash less.
