Garmin have launched a new Marine / Auto GPS with a big 11.4 x 6.9 cm touch screen, plus it takes SD cards. looks like a significant step on from the 276c series devices, the only thing I’d criticize initially is it limited tracklog in auto mode and quite likely its price :(

No tracks and probably not possible to switch off automatic route recalculation makes it as useless for offroad & adventure as the Oregon, Colorado and Nüvi 500/550.

Pity indeed. Could have been a great device with its magnificent screen. :(

Seems as we have to survive with our old technology 276C/278 for yet some time. :(

Yep, great screen, track log is 10,000 points, no saved tracks (automotive mode), really wouldn't like to guess if auto zoom or auto route recalculation can be switch on/off, shame :(

Let's wait and see if it's possible to turn off the route calculation first :)

Unless of course you already know that it doesn't?

Euro price for this unit is about 799 Euros, due to be released in Q1 2009

I don't know if one can or can't switch off automatic zooming and/or recalculation. I'm only guessing. But the guess is based upon how other newer Garmins work. :tears

Neither do I know if one can switch off the automatick switching between marine & automotive modes. In marine mode it can store 20 tracks!

Maybe the routes freeses in marine mode? Maybe it is possible to use marine mode with a frozen route and/or tracks on a topo map inland? I would order a 620 today if I knew that it was possible! But I know no way to find out......:(

Workaround

Checkout http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384430

It's about showing an unlimited number of tracks on a Zumo screen. But converting tracks to polylines and show them overlayed on City Navigator should work well on all Garmins. Maybe this is a way to make the 620 useful?

The technique has been userd for may years by snowmobile riders in northen Scandinavia.

At first glance, it looks interesting, but upon further examination of the specs, I note that it does not support Custom POI databases (speed camera databases), and it only appears to support traffic information via the XM satellite, which is a USA-only device.

Although it is possible that support for traffic information via FM might be included in a European release of this product, it strikes me as odd that it did not come "out of the gate" with FM traffic support.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. I have been very busy for the last 2 years managing avionics design (this includes navigation equipment) for a new production aircraft, and have not done any riding since the summer of 2007. I hope to get a month off to go riding this summer.
