New GP required - anything but garmin

Never had a problem with getting mapping updates onto a range of Garmins :nenau

Yes you do need to be methodical and read each screen in the process. I haven't bothered with Garmin Express yet so that may change my views. Whilst MapUpdater continues to work I doubt I will try GE though.

After a chat with the Garmin rep where I work I installed Garmin Express and found it to be no benefit at all. It was very quick to try to sell me new maps for the Nuvi and equally quick to tell me the Navigator II wasn't supported but was no help compared to what I already had. It has the objectionable feature of adding something to the Windows startup list so it's always running, which I don't care for. The only good thing about it is that it appears to uninstall without problems. It appears to be designed for Nuvi users who never use Mapsource or Basecamp and just need an undemanding way of accessing their lifetime map subscriptions.

garmin vs tom tom

:blagblah Ok, speak as you find. I've had the zumo 550 since 2007 and it's seen me round europe 6 times with no problems. I also use it for regular run outs from routes made up with Mapsource now Basecamp.
I updated it last year for the first time and although it wasn't straightforward I managed to do it and it seems to work fine. I had to use a 2gb card this time but it is fine.
I am currently bombarded at the moment to update again with garmin express but I am ignoring it. Incidentally, the usb lead supplied with the 550 has got a great big round unit incorporated in it, it must be there for a reason.
However, because of all the problems I read on sites like this I thought I'd buy another second hand one, just in case scenario. I have been looking on fleabay for 3 months and the average price they sell for is about £250 ffs.
Is it true that the Tom Tom v5 does NOT come with a motorcycle mount and lead, you have to buy it separately, that's a con isn't it?
To be honest, my two mates use Tom Tom and I have thought about the v5, just for a change!:nenau

I have just bought the Rider V5 and it does come with a mount and it is a 2 bolt install. The only thing that could have made it easier to install is if they pre fitted the lead with the loom connector plug for the GS. I tried the Garmin and found it a bit counter intuitive to use which is why I plumped for the Tom Tom. Loving it so far! The windy route function is great although in it's "most windy" setting it does tend to go a bit mad for B roads and lanes. I will take pic with it mounted later on and get it posted. I read the review in a certain popular magazine and at the end of it and having tried the 660 and the rider thought the chap must have been reviewing something other than the TomTom. Perhaps you just get used to what you are using!

I have had tom tom previously used tyre to plan routs, it's brilliant :-)

Surely putting third party software on a new unit would invalidate its warranty?

Rider V5 Mount

Pics of the mount in place on the 1200GS. I didn't like the fact that it waggled around if you mounted it on the bars so I used the instrument/screen mount rail:

I also like the proximity to the instruments with it mouted here. You can see how it is attached in the next pic:

And I haven't quite finished yet but this is the lead that comes with the TomTom that I need the canbus plug from BMW for:

Should be simple once I get that, there is a socket just below the oil cooler specifically for this.

Congrats to TomTom, I thought it was going to be a struggle to instal and it just isn't.
