I have just taken delivery of one of these cheap SP111 deluxe kits that were mentioned in an earlier thread. Despite a missing RAM mount, it all looks great for the price but I can't get mapsource to work. I installed it (City navigator Europe v7), unlocked it via the web (the installed unlock wizard didn't work) but when i select run mapsource it said there is a problem with this garmin application and prompts me to contact their tech support. It doesn't let me start mapsource.

I don't have the patience to wait until tomorrow for the UK office to open, and there was a 20 minute wait time on the US line I just called, so any suggestions here please? I am running win xp service pack 2. If I reinstall it, will I need to unlock it again or can I do that as many times as needed on the same PC?

Make sure you haven't got any other USB toys active on the port you are using for the GPS. If you have disable them completely. Try again - there is often a USB conflict which doesn't allow Mapsource to detect your GPS unit.
Good luck :thumb

I ordered one of these kits, which arrived last Friday and it took me until last night to unlock Mapsource. I used a combination of the advice from both the US and UK tech support units plus some initiative. What would have been useful to know from the outset is that there is a known issue which the Mapsource update is requried to solve. For what it's worth, I had to go through 14 in/uninstalls and a variety of failure messages.... :confused: My final approach was;

1. Complete uninstall of Mapsource and the associated short cut key
2. Use Explorer to delte any Garmin and Mapsource files in Windows
3. Use registry editor to delete Garmin and Mapsource folders and associations, (use the F3 key and be careful)
4 Turn the computor off and then reboot
5. Install Mapsource as normal and don't bother going to the unlock wizard
6. Turn the computor off and then reboot
7. Go to the Garmin website and download the Mapsource update to the desktop, (ensure that you don't have Mapsource running while this is happening)
8. Open this file and run from the desktop, (don't delete it on completion).
9. Now you can open Mapsource and then use 'Utilities' to unlock using your supplied code.
10. While you're at the Garmin website, download the most recent version of the Mapsource manuel

(The Garmin US reply took two days and a couple of e-mails, after which they referred me to the UK tech unit. They included a fiel attatchment of a picture of Garmin UK which for some reason, my virus checker kept warning me was a worm virus).

Thanks ABS - I'll give this a try though I don't look forward to several reinstalls.... Which is the mapsource update you refer to - I see a v8 that I presumably can order via the UK office and install that DVD - but I don't see any other updates? I can't even get mapsource to launch so presumably I can't do anything with my GPS unit either? Was it the USB programmer file that you updated? Thanks

Hopefully you won't have to go through the same number of rehersals that I did. The error message includes the text 'DSK-FIRST BOOT RECORD.CPP' which indicates that part of the problem is a directory conflict. This is why you have to delete ALL Garmin AND Mapsource files.

The update you require is not V8, it's a patch for the V7 that comes with the SP III. Go to www.garmin.com/support and look at the Mapsource updates. Use the most recent one and take it to the desktop. After you've completed the process, you will be able to unlock Mapsource and then you can use the USB attatchment to download maps. (Just follow the normal Windows 'new hardware' procedure). I didn't upadate any USB file, jsut used the one that came on the installation disk.

I too had a load of problems getting Mapsource unlock wizard to work. But I didn't need the full nuclear option suggested by ABS. Just download the updated version of Mapsource from the Garmin web site.

"Updates & Downloads" side tab -> "Mapping programs" button -> Product "MapSource".

Just installing and using the new version allowed me to enter the code.
Of course, if this doesn't work, then follow the steps given by ABS.

As mentioned in the previous thread, more RAM-B-149Z-G1 mounts are due .. in fact they're in UK, awaiting customs clearance and delivery to my door. I have moved to using Air Canada and feck to BA (cos the cargo unit is run like a union closed shop filled with jobsworth's .. you ain't my favourite airline :dabone).

Thanks Steve - Also, once I receive the mount, do I have everything I need to then mount the unit onto my bike or does it need some kind of additional fixing or case?

.. for your 1150GS then yes, the RAM-B-149Z-G1 has a U-bolt configuration for the handlebar. The round base attaches onto the Garmin cradle (remove from beanbag) and there's a little poly bag pouch of screws/nuts to attach it all together. I reckon it should be attached on by time the kettle boils. :D

I've installed all the software but it's now asking me to enter an unlock code which is supposedly somewhere within the package. Trouble is I can't find it. Anybody know where it is?
