New GS model in 2011

Hi everyone
I plan to return to biking having previously ridden in my young adulthood. My son has recently bought his first motorbike and I found my enthusiasm being rekindled and would like to share the experience with him. My initial thoughts were to look at bikes with strong torquey engines, rather than the high revs type of machine. Some reading pointed me in the direction of a R1200R and I organised a test ride. At the same time I took out a GS and really loved it and plan to buy one. I now find myself in a dilemma ...buy now or wait for the 2011 model. It seems to me that the current promotion with free panniers, and the introduction of the 30 year Anniversary series, particularly in view the current GS version being around since 2004, are likely strategies for clearing old stock in preparation for perhaps a significant revamp of the range. So the choice is ..bargain buy now, or see if the 2011 model was worth waiting for. Has anyone heard any rumours about a 2011 model. Thanks for your thoughts.

They did the free pannier thing last year too...

There's been rumour of BMW developing a water cooled boxer engine for several years now, and I guess its quite possible that it could materialise in the next few years. For a definite answer - ask BMW!

Until then, the 2010 GS is a phenomanal machine, particularly if you're the sort of person who likes torquey, relaxing but great handling bikes!

BTW, they're developing a water cooled engine for two reasons: compliance with future emissions regulations and more HP...

If you have not tried the 1200R yet you should do, it is very different to the GS and I prefer it of the two.

The 2011 bike will be at the shows in the next few months as BM seem to introduce new bikes in September.

One other thought, the VAT increase to 20%, could that affect the date you buy?

I don't think we'll see a new 1200 GS till 2012 at least as they've just swopped the engine for the 2010 model.

There's plenty of excellent second hand bikes around at the moment especially on here, have a test ride on an 08 or 09 and if you like it it'll still be worth 80% of what you pay now in 2 years time

Why wait....

Why wait til 2011 and get clobbered with the 20% VAT! The bike will be new but it will still be a BMW - what is important a new bike or a good bike at a good price. I brought a used R1200GS from a BMW dealer in Peterborough and got the panniers free and it has to be said - I have not stopped smiling since. Great bike - excellant panniers and I ride it from Cambridge to London everyday - rain or shine and it is soooo solid.

Why not buy a new bike now,then in six months time buy another new bike?
It appears to be a strategy adopted by several contributors to this forum.

You could end up waiting forever and a day if you worry too much about the next model. If you wait until 2011, they'll be rumours of an improved version for 2012, and then you'll want to wait until 2012 etc etc. It's called progress, and it will continue forever. Therefore you have a few choices

1) buy a new bike every year just so you have the latest model
2) Buy the newest bike at the time and don't worry about newer versions coming out
3) Buy a used bike, knowing that there's already something out there better and therefore less likely to worry about newer models
4) Never actually buy a bike because you want to wait for the next new improved version to come out

My Grandfather used to do that, buy the latest NORTON FEATHER DUSTER and do 500 miles or so then sell them to the locals for the same price RUN IN ready to thrash.

BINGO he always had a new bike, they always had a RUN IN bike.

Must say this is my first NEW BIKE for some 20 years, always bought from MCN or dealers 2nds

Ah, consumerism at its best! But can you believe everything you read?

To return to Howards question I suggest you buy something now that you like. If you carry on waiting you will be waiting for ever as there will be a "new" model out every year.

Could have bought a new GSA but got a two year old one off this site for an excellent price. Can't really see how they can have improved it very much - indeed the reviews on the 2010 upgraded engine v mine aren't in anyway conclusive and given that I, like most bikers, only use about 25% of throttle most of the time another 5bhp is neither here nor there. Rest of the bike is more or less same as it's always been.
Bottom line is that I bought the bike to use it: Not worry if it had the right number plate, latest colour scheme etc. Already done about 4k miles in my first two months of ownership and love it. In fact it's nearly as good as my old 1150GS!

Well said, Casperfelix.

If you can't be happy with a good quality 2 year old GS or GSA, will you really be that much happier with a 2010 model.

I can't feel any huge difference in the engines although I suppose there is for the purist/expert palate.

With a 2 year old one you won't mind the odd scratch or bump and you'll enjoy a bike that's still in the very early stages of its life. Spend the money on fuel and ride..............

Only if compared to the pre-08 models. I tested a 2010 bike and decided not to swap. When I told the salesman he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "most customers with the 105hp engines come to the same conclusion."

There IS a marked difference to the early 98hp engines but very little compared to the later 105hp engines, most of which put out more BHP anyway.

Try both, then decide. If you want a bike now, get it now: carpe diem!
