I am considering a new GS (not the adventure.) What BMW accessories are worth it vs. aftermarket stuff? I would consider the handguards, side cases and rear hard case with backrest. I have heard that the BMW handguards can cause buffeting at high speeds - how bad is this effect? Is the large crash bar worth it or do the smaller cylinder head guards suffice? The crash bar looks quite large and ungainly, but if it will save expensive damage to other stuff I would tolerate it. Any advice is appreciated.

New GS

Lucky you on getting a new GS - I've a '99 1100GS and have the handguards which are great when used with the heated grips - I'd get them again if/when I get a new bike.

On a separate note have you seen the US based GS forum?

The chaps there will be sure to add their two penny worth on what you should get!

JMOSER:

Good choice of bike! Hand guards are well worth it. Some prefer the Touratech after-market versions but they're fiddlier to fit. You'll have more problems with buffeting coming from the screen rather than the handguards.

Do not bother with BMW engine bars, but you do definitely need some sort of protection. The BMW bars are the least effective, look ugly (IMHO) and have to be removed for servicing. The best AM bars are made by Hepco & Becker. Without bars, any small tumble will damage the cylinder heads. The black plastic protectors do a job of sorts but will not stop the heads being cracked or even holed.

Few people get the BMW rear box as well as panniers. The panniers can be keyed to the ignition key and therefore only require one key all round. The top-box is an old design off the K-series bikes and has a separate lock, easily forced, and rather clumsily designed. Most people in the UK go for a Givi box in combination with BMW panniers. Alternatively, go for a Touratech or Zega aluminium system instead.

If you have the chance to order any other accessories now, get the heated grips and any extra electric socket. The standard bike benefits from extra lights, a different seat, and a bigger screen. All these are best obtained after-market.

Have fun.

GS modifications/additions

Hello all my fellow GS riders across the pond, well actually across the us and the pond. Lots of GS riders here and plenty of country to cover as well. I have ridden several times in Europe and Spain and one of my next trips will be Great Britain.

I ride a 01 1150 gs. Probably the most significant change to enhance riding comfort was lowering the footpegs and installing bar risers on the handlebars. Much more comfortable position. Changed the exhaust, removed the stock can and cat and replaced with Two Brothers exhause. Got about a 5 hp increase according to the dyno and much throater sound, also reduced the bike weight by 18 lbs.

PIAA 520 lights and replaced the headlight bulbs with PIAA 55/100w. Lights up the road. And don't forget the Ohlin's, greater degree of adjustment and really increases the stability and handling of the bike especially under load conditions.

As you can probably tell, too much time on the internet and way too easy to order stuff. I really enjoy the bike and have a great time riding.

We have a small group here in portland called PDXGS. Stop by and take a look at www.PDXGS.com.

Hi Deacon,

welcome to the brit asylum. You mention replacing your bulbs with PIAA 55/100w. Both my bulbs are single filament (55w stock) H1(I think) halogens. Is there a different bulb fitment for the US market?
