Hi All great to have finally found this place, iam a born again biker and looking to buy a GS. Iam a little short in the height department( 5ft7ins) and so iam woundering if anybody has found a problem with the seat heights on these bikes, and if so is there a solution!!!!!! and which bike would people suggest i go for be it New or Secondhand.

Lookforward to the feed back,

Paul

Hi, and welcome to the brotherhood:clap

There are many GS,s out there so have a good look around.

Many of the dealers are offering good deals this time of year on pre reg bikes

Williamas over in manchester have a good selection in with different specs.

Seat hight is adjustable, so you should be ok, but get a test ride to see how

it feels. Good luck, Hope you get what you like.:thumb2

I had a similar dilemma. Being 5'7" myself (not short btw :rob ) I pondered the seat height thing as my biggest hurdle once I'd decided to get a GS. After doing a bit of research :type I found there are three seat heights available for the GS. 820mm fixed, 840 - 860mm variable and a 880 - 900 variable.
I eventually chose the 840 - 860 because I thought the seat would more comfortable over time. It's on the lowest setting btw. It does take a bit of getting used to, ie you must park an a flattish surface or park in such a way that it's easy to get on. Also, I guess the lower seat would mean your legs would be more cramped and I bought my GS to get away from years of sports bike cramped legs, neck, back etc, so I didn't want anything that made the ride less pleasurable, which a lower seat would. Dealers let you take one out for ~3hrs on a test so that's probably your best course of action.
On the new/used debate, it's really down to your preferences. Lots of deals on 07 either new or pre-reg, ie ~1300 off list for a pre-reg at the moment. I tried to find used 07's but there either weren't any private ones for sale or dealers were asking too much, ie too close to the pre-reg prices for me to buy used. NB there is an 'updated' model out next year, different engine and a few cosmetic stuff, but I guess they will be top dollar when they hit the showrooms.

I'm 5ft 8in on a good day, have a 1200GS with standard seat, and have had no problems. I've dropped it once in 22000 miles (Saturday in fact :o) owing to inattention when parking.

Thanks for you help so far iam ringing round at the moment for availability of test rides.
thanks again for the help its great to hear.:clap

i am 5'6", i have a 1150 gs fitted with a sergent seat, i decided that it was to tall for me, so bought wilbers replacement shocks, that were 40mm shorter, had to buy a replacement center stand that i have shortened, so it works and am now currently looking for a side stand, to do the same, but it works ok and i can get both feet on the ground and have not had any clearence problems :thumb

Only joking, welcome

Monkey bike ???

5 Foot 6 with a 29" inside leg (ohh err missus) and had an 1150 with a standard seat with no problems. I now have a 1200 with a standard seat and find it slightly easier than the 1150 because of the much-reduced weight.

I am 5'5" ( female ) and have the 1150gs, seat is on lowest setting and I am ok. I think it depends on your inside leg measurement not necessarily your overall hieght, think my inside leg is 29" - 30". Not been riding this monster long so still adjusting to the extra weight from what I was used to riding (sports then 650gs) but not too bad really, think its like anything, you get used to it in time :thumb2

couple a bags of cement on the bag will normally drop it down. I'm 5'8" have a 1150 GSA on standard settings and you do get use to it. Test Ride and if you get one head off to a big bit of soft ground and do slow figures of 8's and slow circles.

You'll just get use to it, oh and on soft ground when you tip it over you'll also be able to practise picking it up.

If you want a tall bike get an HP2 it's like driving a double decker from the top deck...

I am 5ft9 with 29" inside leg and the 1200Gs with the standard seat is just on the border line especially in traffice and dodgy road surfaces in London

I tried the lower seat but it was too cramped. I think it's down to personal body shape. :rob

Does anybody know if the standard 'Sargent' seat brings the height down a tad. Iv,e been considering that as an option
