Hi all, just changed my 1150 Adv for a year old HP2,and you guys were right-this bike ROCKS,don't need to worry about the damn thing falling over anymore,it's brilliant,Ilove it!!!. A couple of questions if you could help please-I got the owners manual etc. but I understand there is a CD that comes with new bikes-service details etc.-where can I get one or could somone do me a copy ?,and can I use my optimate 3 charger to keep the battery topped up through the power socket or is this charger incompatable with the canbus electronics ?. Thank's all for your informative posts-it all adds to the experience, cheer's !

Impossible!
Another HP2 in Scotland??
I thought I had the only HP2 in the village???

Well. I cannot answer many tech questions on account that I don't know, but my Optimate works fine and is definately a must to have! Basically, if you as much as look at the bike the wrong way the battery drains!

Maybe hook up for a run one Sunday? I'm out every one come rain or shine.

PM me if you fancy it.

Ian

Hey Ubergeek - welcome to the wonderful world of HP2's - I bung an optimate directly onto my battery most weekends without problems. Just had the original changed under warranty so maybe this is a thing of the past now :) (Yeah right!)

I have never seen the CD :nenau

Hey, good for you. The HP2 is a rock solid machine. The CD is a good resource. I got one with my bike. Your dealer can get a copy, should be easy.

All 2004 (and some of the late 2003) models, with the exception of the F650, require a generation II Gel Battery Charger - the use of any other charger will overcharge and damage the battery. This charger, with a BMW connector, can be plugged directly into the socket and can also be used on the F650, no problems.

Bikes with CAN BUS technology, i.e. R1200GS-RT-ST---K1200S/R, come equipped with either an AGM or GEL battery, depending on the model, and to charge these through the accessory socket requires a special charger, like the BMW Maintenance Charger, and these come with specific instructions on how to use it. You can charge the battery directly on the battery terminals if your charger is suitable for charging a AGM(glass matt) battery but DO NOT try and charge the battery thought the charge point/aux socket unless you have a specific charger, it will blow the main computer on the bike - many $$$$.

If you have the right charger and you’re using the charge point/aux socket then:

1: Turn the ignition of the motorcycle to the "ON" Position.
2: Connect the battery charger to the ON BOARD SOCKET first, THEN connect the power plug to a 110 volt outlet.
3: NOW Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

A generation II Gel Battery Charger can be used on batteries in these bikes with alligator clips but BMW recommend that the battery is REMOVED OR DISCONNECTED from the bike.

BMW also recommends that if the bike will be sitting for more than a week, it should be charged weekly. If a battery fails due to improper maintenance or if any damage is incurred on a CAN Bus equipped bike due to the wrong charger, these items are not covered under BMW Warranty.

The battery on my HP2 is quite small and but I’m running it regularly and so far have not needed to charge it on a regular basis.

Hope that helps

Garry

Well that was an eye opener Gary, I have just been using my Optimate III hooked onto my battery - I had better check it is OK for the bike

Since my last update for the heated grips I installed. The BMW Maintenance Charger does not work after the Can Bus fully shuts down. The charger point/aux socket now fully turns off which puts the charger into arror. :nenau

The charger worked fine on the HP until the update, and still works fine on my 1200rt.

BMW has just received version 9 update. We are hoping this will solve the problem when I take the HP in this week.

I have noticed with the cooler weather the battery is showing signs of not holding it's charge over a week or two.

Battery Charging

Thank's for the help guys. If I remove the battery for charging, when I re-connect it do I need to re-set the throttle position sensor as I used to on my 1150-ignition on-turn throttle fully open and back twice switch off ignition ???. The handbook dosn't mention this. Cheer's.

No:beerjug:

The battery on my HP2 was flat when I first saw the bike (hehe - it was worth it to see the look on the Sales mans face) and it went flat while we were away for 2 weeks, in fact it started first time but I had left it low on gas so I rode the mile or so to the local station, filled up and when I tried to start it again it just went 'click', since then I have put a charger on it every weekend despite using it daily.

My local B*W people who swapped the battery out last week told my wife this morning:

"Keep using whatever you are using at the moment....no matter which charger you are using it will not make any difference and it sure won't harm the bike nor the battery. All chargers are more or less the same, some are better than others. They all do the same, keep the battery topped up with a slow trickle of energy" :nenau

I use an Optimate III SP and a site I found says:

"Suitable for all types of rechargeable lead-acid batteries: filler cap types; absorbed acid "MF" for motorcycles; valve regulated (VRLA); & GEL-electrolyte types"

So B*W says use whatever, I say it sounds like an Optimate III SP is OK, thanks again for your advice Garry :)

Battery charging etc.

Thank's guys for all your help, optimate 3 sp directly connected to battery it is then. Thank's again for your help.

what salt ??

i hope youve washed the salt off that bike as it came from harwich /southampton,

Hi,it's a small world-very small when you ride an HP2 !!!
The 230 mile ride home in pouring rain did a pretty good job of washing off any salt !! Great bike though- well pleased ! Given it a good clean and polish-now like new. How's Andy getting on with 1150 adv. ? Cheer's.

funny seem to be quite a lot that own these bikes who live on the coast !! i think andy is loving the adv ive not rode out with him since he's had it though don't think he'll want to ride with me on an hp , glad youre enjoying the bike ,we went through a lot to get that thing back to essex ,several hours stuck in traffic on the m3 with the bike in the back of my truck, i thought several times of unloading it and riding off into the distance and leaving andy to drive my truck home , still we got home eventually 3 weeks later youve got it , must be one of the most travelled hp's without ever starting the motor, good luck with it , maybe one day we' ll bump into one another [not literally ]
