New to iPads so please bear with me. We have a nas which is running a daap server which all our other devices can see and access, including iTunes on a pc. How do I get the iPad/iTunes to see it? I can't find any options to search for the server.

I don't think the iPad has native support to allow streaming content from a NAS through Apples IOS operating system.

I have similar kit myself and have never been able to browse the content on our Synology NAS from my iPad, iPod or iPhones. No problems at all from PC or Mac, although the jailbroken Apple TV upstairs is based on IOS and browses/plays content wirelessly from the NAS with no problem (probably because it is built to do so).

Basically, I think you will need a third-party app to do so. You will also need to enable the NAS as an itunes and/or media server with UPnP, and use the correct format for the files stored. I believe most .mp4 files work well on the iPad.

If you find anything that works well please post here for mine and others benefit, I tried Buzz player on iPad2 but it didn't work. Many thanks and good luck with it.

Update:

I just reloaded BUZZ HD Player for £1.99 and it let's me browse my Synology NAS and plays almost all my files. Some .avi movies stutter and play without audio but its otherwise pretty good.

Cheers for that I'll check it out. :thumb2 Is it LAN only or can you see it across the net?

I loaded the AirPlay app for £2.99 and that's even better, playing .AVI files seamlessly with audio.

Only tried it across my wireless LAN, would need to try a remote login to the ip address to see if it works over the web.

If you're using the Synology Diskstation there are Synology apps in the Apple store to give you file access, audio and photos - search for DS Audio and DS File. These work fine in iPhone and iPad when I'm on my home LAN but I haven't tried them via the internet. They should work in theory, tho' I find remote access to the Diskstation via the internet is a bit temperamental using the options available from a PC.

You might also need to update the diskstation to the latest version of the Synology o/s but this is definitely worth doing for the additional features that it brings.

Thanks for the heads up, I did see those Synology apps and hadn't got around to trying them yet. Still using the old DSM (v3.2) so need to firmware update the NAS.

I have ripped all my DVD's to a folder on the NAS in .Mp4 format using Magic DVD Ripper with the iPad preset, nice to be able to use it as my own personal Terabyte 'Cloud' server, the iPad only has 64Gb for storage so would be easily filled otherwise.

I've found a similar app for our Netgear Stora but was hoping to get the flamin thing to use iTunes. Hey ho. At least I can now access the files locally as well as over the Internet. :thumb

Apple don't make it easy mind. :blast
