Eldest lad would dearly like a laptop from Santa this year - since I know feck all about IT any recommendations what to look for before I pop over to Comet to window shop?
It'll mostly be used for web surfing and social networking with the occasional film and music vid. I'd guess I could stretch to £350, is that too low to get something ok?

Look at dell website for decent well-priced laptops.
Also, John Lewis sometimes have good deals on and their warranty is good too :thumb2

No - £350 will be fine for that useage. How old is he? If he's a teenager he probably knows what he wants so give him the budget and maybe let him choose.

Consider buying from John Lewis as they will give you a 2 year warranty in the base price - this Toshiba is under £300 http://www.johnlewis.com/231395866/Product.aspx

If Comet is your preferred supplier then this Acer has a decent spec for the £299 price http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Laptops/buy-ACER-AS5250-Laptop/763861 - just a 12 month warranty but you get more memory and a larger hard drive.

Don't get sucked into the "I want one for games" thing. Get a separate games console for that.
