IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Wifey got me some new lids/ front panels for my BMW panniers.
There are no destructions with them for how to put them on or get old ones off.
Any ideas?

You don't say which panniers you have, but................

The old "system" panniers that fit the GS1150/R1150R/R1100s had lids that were pop-rivetted on.

With those - you had to drill out the rivets on the lid-side of the hinge with a 3mm drill and fit stainless screws/washers/nylock nuts to (if you wanted to change the lids again) or re-rivet.

i think the covers are just glued on, hence they sometimes decide to part company with the rest of the case whilst on the motorway :augie

There's been a few threads over on f650.com about it, try posting the question there and you'll get an answer and possibly a soultion to prevent the new covers coming off in the future.

Happy birthday btw.:hpbirthda

Thanks.
There are 2 pin hinges at the bottom of each case but i'm buggered if i know how to get them out. you get new ones with the new lids

BASTARDS!!!!
They have changed the design of the lid. Only slightly by riveting the lid on but it means now that the locks won't fit as the rivets are in the way. BMW said that there were no changes at all.
Me thinks that they should sort this out

I have changed the lid on this type of pannier and I used the new hinge pin to drift out the old pin. It wasn't to difficult, just don't drive the new pin in too far and then you can pull it and the old pin out with a pair of pliers.

Hope this helps

Tim

If you have the aluminium shells. They are held on with double sided tape. You DO NOT need to remove the case lid.

The old ones will probably be dificult to remove and are likely to end up badly bent.

Good luck replacing them, they'll look great when your done. Don't go removing the lids it won't achieve anything.

If you have the compleat lids then ignor what I've said :augie They'll fit on by removing the hinge pins.

I experienced this too. I bought a second hand lid, outer ally cover and plastic lid. That was the riveted version and I had to buy new inner locking mechanism as old one would not fit.

Sold now and gone down the TT route as side loading panniers became a pain.

Sorted now new lids on had to get new lock strips.
How do i get the lock barrel out of the old ones to put in the new?

Looking from inside at the barrel, the last ´pin´or ´slider´acts as a catch to keep the whole barrel assembly in place, push this in with something thin and slide out the barrel.
