Hi all,

For the last few days I've noticed a new noise from the RH head area on my 2002 1150 Adv - 160k miles.

I've embedded a couple of videos - simply because I don't have a facility just to record sound. The noise is a high pitched clicking - I'm wondering if it's arcing from the HT lead - although there's no visible sign of that.

Plus the whole thing clanks like a Victorian central heating system, but frankly, I'm used to that... :D

Any ideas?

Sorry - should have mentioned that there has been no roughness, drop in performance or change in fuel consumption. The video was taken at the end of a 250 mile day and the engine was hot, for what it's worth.

I did the left hand cam chain tensioner mod about three years ago.

Does it only do it at tickover ??

If so put your finger up the back of the throttle body and put some tension on the throttle quadrant back against the idle stop does it go away??

If yes throttle spindle wear and Mr Scriminger does something with new bushes or a good used one

Hard to tell from the video

Broken Exhaust stud causing a blow out??

Pitting of Cam follower??

Broken Cam chain Blade???

If you turn down the drum and bass on the radio, we might be able to hear what youre on about :D

Take off cylinder head cover and have a look.. could be worn cam chain, or indeed any of the features mentioned previously.

Hi, thanks for the input.

It's not the TB - it was the first thing I checked (I also have quite low mileage TBs fitted anyway).

It doesn't just do it at tickover. No blowing from the exhaust (recently had new studs and nuts fitted, along with new gaskets when I got the headers ceramic coated).

I have little doubt that there is a degree of wear likely in the heads and will deal with each item as and when it becomes a problem - I don't like to tinker when not necessary. I'm still curious about the ticking, though - I'm just uploading another video clip I took this morning of the engine when it's cold - sounds much nicer... :D

I'll post it when it's uploaded...

Sounds a bit like my 135k 1150, which has clanked for years, mind you if you do decide to have a dig would be interested to know what you find.:aidan

Yup - the clanking has been SOP for my bike for years, undoubtedly wear and slack which will have to be addressed eventually.

I just don't like new noises...

How much wear should you expect in an engine of that mileage?

If fluids are changed at the stated intervals - and I am sure a lot of bike have theirs changed more frequently wear should still be at a minimum.

"Ride" magazine in the Jan 2012 issue stripped down an 1100 Boxer engine and found that it was "virtually as good as new" except a tiny bit of wear on one of the cam lobes. I think they put this down to the bike being parked on its side stand so oil drained away from one of the pots.
(Vines Motorrad did the strip down)

Video recorded this morning when the engine was cold...

From the sound of the last video at ticking gets louder as the recorder goes near the tb. I guess it wouldn't do any harm to get them checked. Before Vern redid mine the left rattled and right didn't but both were worn and I could never get a really good tb balance.
Can now and they are silent.

Yes, I only noticed how bad that was when I played the video back - you can hardly hear it - and it's not the sound I started the thread about.

I have my original TBs in a drawer - I think I'll have them refurbed over the winter.

It's a lot quieter when it's cold, isn't it?

I'm still thinking in terms of HT arcing, from the type of sound it is...

I could hear the noise you are talking about. Sounds cam chain ish to me. Any chance it could be the guide rail snapped?

Here you go - Posted this before when others have asked about a similar noise , and they've found the same wear - try a search for camshaft wear. :thumb2

I've also had three other bikes in the workshop since with the same wear
The strange thing is the cams on other side of the engine have been perfect.

Knocking noise from the R/H side - R1100 50K miles.

Cause = Worn cams, cam followers, cam/rocker holder and rocker arms.

The cylinder head after all the rocker gear and camshaft has been removed

Cam/rocker holder.

Cam and cam followers.

Camshaft.

Cam followers in the holder.

Cam followers

New cams and followers

I think there is an interesting reply coming up on this. Seems the GS has another myth to expel soon.

Come on Mike you told the Americans before us.

Try reading Mike's ride report........

The bike is a little unwell
But at least Mike is OK :thumb2

Bum.

You did a quick edit :-)

Oh man that totally sucks :(

You definitely seem in reasonable spirits - i would be in tears if a bike that id ridden for 150k went up in smoke like that Totally awful :tears

Hope you get sorted ok soon and I suppose you can contemplate what the next bike will be.

Im curious as to what went wrong then??

All the best anyway and please keep us updated - ive always loved your reports.
