I am comming up to 13K now on my 05 GS; When the engine is at idle I think I can hear what sounds like a fan whirring, further definition is like a top end tinny whirr noise, possible piston heads making a high frequency whirr? does sound like anything?- I have it serviced and have changed the oil many times- it has never been in bad condition. I am thinking of the best way to describe the noise:... like a metallic whirring noise, sounds like a fan..sort of- has anyone else noticed anything like this? diagnosis?...

I can hear a whirring noise occasionally on my 12GSA, it sounds to me a similar sound i used to get when a rocker cover came adrift on an old Triumph I had, a sort of sloshy, whirry, hollow sound:nenau I've checked and double checked the bike, and found nothing wrong, I have had no problems at all with the bike over the last 8mths, the sound has been there on and off for the last 11000mls.

I like to think of it as character:D Then again it could be in my mind:eek

I've had 2 other 1200GS's & neither have made the same noise.

Could it be an engine breather?
Jim

Thats certainly what mine "sounds" like, trouble is that when you try and listen for it, the sound's just not there, very subtle it is, but IMO definatley there occasionally whilst riding along, I thought it may be something to do with the ABS/servo pumps and their associated valve block.

Could it be something vibrating against something else. The vibration only occuring a certain harmonic which is when the engine speed is at idle. I had a "strange" noise on a 1150 GSA, one of the crash bars legs had snapped and could vibrate .....

Electric fuel pump whirring under load ???

what load? are you saying i'm fat?:D
Great suggestions for what the noise could be... i definately associate with- if i listen for it i cant hear it! and maybe its in my head! I hope the rocker cover isnt comming off! i am off to listen to it again now-

We had a noise a bit like you discribe on a 1300 Pan. It turned out to be a dry camshaft seat. It wasn't so noisy once we put some more oil in the thing :o

Just a thought, is the noise comming from the right? do you often start the bike from cold whilst it's on it's side stand?

Brake servo motor perhaps.

I just had this on my 05 GS at 12K miles. If it is this it will soon manifest itself with battery problems as the dervo uses more juice than the motor can generate. For the first 6 weeks or so it was happening intermittently and without the brake failure warning coming on. Dealer finally traced problem to the diff which was replaced under warranty:clap

Narcoda, I hope I'm not being cheeky, but.... Is there a reason you're not telling us the result of this thread? Dealer conflict? You did ask us for our views and then :nenau PM me if you like :)

If you ask for advice/help, then I think we should all share the knowledge :mmmm
