Just had a bash taking the old belt off, apart from the 845t**** Hepco and Becker crash bar's it was'nt to bad.
Bikes 10 years old this month and i've had it from new with just 22.5k miles now. Decided after reading on here and filling my nappy to change the belt. The old one is'nt split or anything, looks pretty good but is a little hard. Now i bought a spare belt (611 like the one that came off) about five years ago, will it be ok to use or should i be thinking old rubber is bad rubber ? I't still in the package a feels fairly soft still.
Any thoughts please ?:nenau

Just to add what a pain taking the tank off! It's an adventure tank and fuel all over when i took the balance pipe off, to be expected, but why dont they route that pipe higher and over all the gubbins ?

You don't need to take the tank off :D

If it is an adventure it should have quick release couplings all round ?? :nenau :nenau

So how did you get fuel all over the place??? Did you take it off the tank on the left??

It's a standard GS but with the adventure tank. And nope i took it off the right as your sat on the bike.
As for adjusting pully tension by the book........Fark! the wiring loom is snug right up against the allen bolt, so i'm going pry bar chaps. Wish me luck! OH and i'm gonna risk old /new belt, it looks ok, is new and softer than the old one so should be ok.
If i adjust with pry bar to 1/4 deflection between the pully wheels will that be ok ?

Well just got it on.:D
I've tension it by lifting the alternator with care. I can twist the belt so the 4 rib's will face foward to no further, i'm guess thats about 1/4" deflection.
Am i their abouts ?

Before you put it back together, get yourself a set of QD connectors for the tank, two straight and two right angle ones :thumb2

Oh and ditch the HB engine bars, they are more trouble than they are worth.

I'm with you on the engine bar's1 I've got those connector on the fuel line just not the balance line.
I don't plan taking the tank off again until the next belt change all being well.
I think the belt's adjusted ok as i can twist the ribs of the belt to face forward ie 90 degree's, think it's stitting on the wheels ok so i'm gonna put all the crap back on!:thumb
Thanks for help

Belting

Changed the belt on my mates 1100 after 86,000 miles!! looked like new he wanted to put it back!. Took the one off the 1150 after 40,000 that had started to shred.

Yep cheers, i had a look at that before i started on it:thumb2
I just was'nt sure about the tension as no way can i do it by "the book" method because the allen bolt is surrounded by the loom. Bit silly but hey ho. I've used your pry bar method, with great care and a cloth wrap i put some pressure under the alternator on that little engine case through bolt. Think i'm ok, i did it so i can twist the belt through 90 deg, ie ribs face forward. I'm sure i read that somewhere or other ?
Just hope all my ribs are in the right grooves!!:blast
Engine bar's are back on so i'll stick the tank back later.
Anyother jobs worth doing while it's off ?
It had a full service before going to bed almost 4 year's ago!! I've just changed the oil and now the belt. Off to France when i get back from France (if that makes sense) in two weks. :D

I think my belt would have gone on, it looked ok, a bit hard but no splits etc. Is it worth it though ? Mines been on the bike since new, ie ten years. Just hope i dont get any fail's of other stuff when i go to Europe on it next month. It's only done 22k but been stood for almost 4 years!! Cleaned and full service before it went away though, and seems ok on the 10 miles i've put on it since.
Motorhome hoiliday with mates next week, then back and off on my own on two wheels. I was going to go on my R100R, but had forgotten what a great bike the 1150 is.:D

Work's a treat now. Thanks for all the help chaps.
I would like to poke Mr Hepco and Mr Becker in the pie hole though.:D

What you should have done while the alternator cover was off is cut in in half horizontally with a fine bladed jigsaw.
Makes removing it next time, or by the side of the road a doddle if you've H&B bars fitted.

What and miss the fight with those Hepco and Becker boy's ? Naaah, if it comes to it on the road side, the crash bar's will mark the spot for all of time.

sorry to hijack this but..

this winter I fell off on ice resulting with the bike spinning on the H & B engine bar. Later in the month, whilst stopped at a junction I was hit on the R.H. engine bar by a car (blind B**tch), bike landing heavily again on L.H.S. The bars saved the bike both times. I hadnt realised at the time how hard the bars had been hit but yesterday it was service time (I know they are a sod to remove) and I found that the mounting lug on the L.H. bar had sheared off and there were several dings in the bars.

These werent noticed before due to the build up of winter/spring/summer muck. I`ll put up with the hassle and keep the bars, cheaper than rocker covers.
