New owner 2004 1150 GSA

It could well be the starter motor, if the battery is new!
Charge battery up and then test how much the starter motor pulls down a new battery, whilst cranking over
Use a multi meter
Mine did it
New battery & turns out it was the starter motor too last year (expensive last year - new battery & Valeo starter motor, plus 2 new genuine BMW coil sticks …..🙈)
Cheers ... I'll try and test it with fingers and toes crossed !!

Update .... The "new" battery was duff and a replacement fitted that so far seems to be behaving

New problem now - slipping clutch when giving it some in 4/5/6th ..... so back at the garage

Update to the update .... new clutch fitted which should hopefully outlast me - picture from Rainbow Workshop who the dealer I bought the bike from sent to have it sorted

They look horrendous when the clutch is being done! :D
Did you have the modified long splined clutch plate put in?

BMW main dealer doing the job… so it’ll be OEM parts.
Not what I’d imagine a main dealers workshop would look like though.
Which one is doing the job?

If you Google “Rainbow Workshop” it comes up as an independent. So not a main dealer, but whether the clutch plate is OEM or modified can only be answered by the mechanic doing the job.

One would hope he would have enough experience to realise why the modified clutch plate would be an advantage.

What was the modification?

I’ve done two 1150 clutches in the past and never knew there were mods available. Was a fair while ago mind, got my parts from Motorworks.

When I had an RT it seemed a couple of years especially we're suffering from input shaft spline wearing due to minor misalignment issues from build... I checked mine and it was fine... Add to the issues of the splines running dry and wearing the longer splined plates you could buy could negate or cover slight wear but if you didn't have a problem then standard splines with correct lube should be fine... That's what I learnt... Probably different scenarios as well...

I only ever saw one 1150 with worn gearbox input spines.. it had a sidecar attached.
Seemed to be mainly an issue in the States, they seemed to have an obsession with “spline lubes” , every little rattle from the gearbox/clutch area and you’d see dozens of Internet mechanics all declaring the problem as spline wear, and advocating pulling off the gearbox and doing an annual spline lube.

Now if you really wanted to know about gearbox input shaft spline wear you have to go back to the K75/K100 models, and don’t forget the same models driveshaft spline wear.

Ha 😁 I only did mine as a bored early COVID thing to do... I first heard it on K75s but like you say and ADV type thread with no real answers and 10 people arguing about how much they know is a real bore...
