I asked a few of you for some pannier measurements, as I wanted to make my own.
Firstly, I just want to say thanks to all who helped out, and secondly, I wanted to share the results so far.

So far, in between other jobs here in the workshop, the first one is completed, the second one is being assembled this week.

I used 2mm ally, and the extrusion for the seal, and the corner protectors were stock I had laying about, so minimal outlay really.

It was great fun building them, and I will probably build a few sets, and pass them on, as these were really a prototype excersise, but turned out ok.

They're lined with neoprene inside, with recesses for the rivets. They weigh in at 5 kgs each, and I'm pretty confident they'll take one hell of a beating.

The next lot will probably feature internal safe, external bottle carriers etc.
The tie downs are stainless and will withstand a good ratcheting if needed. :)

Any comments, good or bad are more than welcome, as we learn more from failure than success.

I think a topbox in that style would look good, I'd be interested in buying one that would be big enough for a helmet :thumb2
 
Not quite to my liking I must admit, but they certainly look functional and pretty robust. :thumb2

Yes, a safe inside is going in the rhs pannier, and to make one for a topbox is no problem at all.
With regards making some for you all, I have no problem at all doing that, I know a few people on here do that already, and I'm wary of treading on anyones toes.

With regards a price, to be honest, I hadn't given it much thought, as I hadn't anticipated them being liked as much.
I would price them at £150.00 each. This would be a size large enough to incorporate a helmet, and have a safe in the bottom.

Mounting them. (panniers) I'm currently building a set of stainless rails along the same design as the fold down ADV ones. I can't be more precise, as it's measure/cut/fit/tig at the minute, so when they're done, I'll post photos, and by that stage, will have a jig/templates made up, so that mass production, as well as pricing, is easier. :)

(Top Box) mounting is something that we'd have to address at the time, depending on the bike. I would probably mount mine, (if I was making a top box for myself) via the read adv rack, or extension, but it will vary I guess between bikes. At the end of the day, it's only metal, and anything can be made to suit any requirement.

Amazing...they look really nice...and the price is also really good.

After sorting some other things (money...money..money...:tears:tears) I think about panniers and yours would be one of the options.

Two things/recommendations...
1. As they said about...you should think about creating a topbpx
2. Have you think to create a right box with a curve in order to be used from the guys (like me..) that they have the GSA panniers (you know,..the ones with the curve..)

Yes, I thought about curved boxes, and for the time being, I'm going to steer clear of them, in order to keep my prices down. At the moment, it's cheaper to manufacture square boxes, in my humble opinion, square reinforced boxes can take more abuse, and it takes less time, and costs less than fancier boxes, and keeping my overheads and labour times down, means I can pass on the savings through my prices.

As time goes by, we'll see where this leads. I do spend the majority of my time building custom motorcycles, and fabricating special "One Off" parts, and If I make things too complicated on the pannier front, I may shoot myself in the foot, and work quality will no doubt suffer. Hopefully at some point, I can offer a wider variety of top quality pieces at a price to suit the working lad/lass.

Nice job, they remind of the sort of boxes that are used to pack professional camera kit and electronic kit such as used by rock bands.
 
Hey Tuned... Dunno, it hasn't rained yet :D

Actually, the sealing edges are "w" shaped aluminium extrusion strips that interlock, sooooo.. it should be waterproof.
