Well, actually it's a new-to-me PC and I want it to connect to my old Epson 2100. Amazingly I've still got the two Printer Software CDs (or should that be DVD? That in itself shows you I know eff-all). They both say they are Disc Vol.1.1 and one is labelled (EFGD) and the other (EIPS). I wrote on the (EFGD) one that that was the one I loaded on my old PC way back in 2002. The PC I have now is a different one, so my question is which disc should I use this time. I'm wary of just trying the wrong one in case I upset things.

Can you help, please? :)

Probably neither but more info is needed. What version of OS was on one old and what is on the new? There is a good chance the old printer won't work on the new PC. Best way to get a driver is to go to the Epson website and get the newest driver from there for your current OS if that isn't supported don't try using an older one as it won't work.

The old discs are VERY unlikely to be of any use.....they will be written for Windows 98 I'd guess.

Two things to try....
1) just plug the printer in and reboot the PC....there's a very good chance that W7 or whatever you're on will recognise the old Epson.

2) If that doesn't work, go HERE and get the W7 specific drivers for it (or change the OS to what you have) then install the driver, reboot PC and plug the printer in :)

HTH

Hell's bells, that was quick!

I hate to ask this, but how can I tell what OS I have? I've clicked on the little Widows flag icon and then on Computer, that's no help, then I clicked on all programs .... oh, hang on, it has various updates for Windows 7, so I suppose I have System 7. Feck, I'm good. :augie

Right. I've clicked on AberdeenAngus's link and selected the latest driver and it asks whether I want to Run or to Save "epson375844eu.exe (6.48 MB) from download.epson-europe.com" which do I go for, Run? Save?

Please?

PS I know my questions may well seem infantile, it's just that I'd hate to tie the system in knots. It's a great (well, it certainly was) a great printer, it's A3, it can use sheets or a roll of paper, and an adaptor to print CD/DVD labels. On top of that I've got about seventy quids' worth of cartridges that will be useless if I don't get it to play ball. Your help is most certainly appreciated. :)

Run. Then, if it asks if you want to install, hit 'yes'.

Don't worry, I'll stay online. You're not alone. We'll get through this damned thing together, or die trying....

For the above, thank you, thank you. :beerjug:

The latest widow is titled WinZip Self-Extractor - epson375844eu.exe (which means sod-all to me, but what do I know) and invites me to "Setup" No doubt I should do that, yes?

Aye.

If it asks you if you want to do an automatic install or a custom one, do the custom option, and during that, de-tick any boxes that ask you if you want to install any crap like an additional browser bar or something (common and BLOODY annoying practice these days)

Doing it the 'custom' way (Or may be called 'advanced') it lets you ignore all the nasty extras that end up highlighting words as adds in posts etc........just go through the process and read the small print, and let it install itself on your 'c' drive (personally, I'd stick it in a new folder I'd call "printer drivers" or similar. but we may be pushing our luck there ;) )

AberdeenAngus, sorry, I realised I was being neurotic, so with reckless abandon I clicked Setup.

Now it's saying "Printer driver will be installed, Please wait.... "

Now "Would I like to install this device software?" ... yesss... I suppose I would, feckit, here goes

Yup that's fine.

Just mind what Fanums said. If it goes on to ask you to install a custom bar or something then comeback here before clicking.

Yeeeharr, just been told that it was installed successfully. :bounce1

Piece of piss.:augie

PS, my responses got a little out of synch with your (and, indeed, everybody's) replies, sorry about that :)

Don't count your chickens till they're printed
Sorry, I'll be with you in a sec, I'm busy counting printed chickens...

It works, it WORKS!!!

Seriously, thank you all. I really do need a printer at the moment to print all the holiday stuff, we're off in a few days and there are vouchers, reservations, boarding passes and intineraries itin... feckit, routes to be printed. The wife has been on at me for months to get it sorted or get another printer, another small issue is that it doesn't always load the paper properly and I'm the worst in the world for getting off my arse and actually getting things done.

Thank you again. :clap

Brilliant. Printers very often get left behind when a new OS comes along. Looks like your on a winner this time.
Sigh. I just got cocky following that little triumph of ours and tried to do the same with my scanner, an Epson Perfection 1640SU. It seems that there no driver available for it. Bugger. Oh, I've selected both options Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit, I don't suppose that it matters by now, but how would I find out in case I need to know some time in the future?

Click windows flag the right click computer and then properties it will say there if it is 64 or 32 bit. A clue would also be in the amount of ram it has. If it has 4GB or more then it's definitely 64 bit.

Ah, cheers, I hadn't thought of right-clicking it when I looked. It seems to be a 32-bit, and a mere 2 GB RAM, as you thought. :thumb2
