New Project

How many splines on the input shaft,?
I’ll have a look see for a kick start gear

Thanks Mikey.

I count 12 splines.

Would you like the job of pressing it all together if you have one ?

I have neither the tools or expertise for that

I’d definitely recommend timing it with a strobe lamp. The Hall effect tester is a bit hit and miss re getting the idle timing right. I’ve learned to slacken the bean can bolts a bit. Start the bike then use the strobe while turning the bean can until it’s spot on. Mind the exhaust though!

Thanks for that.

I’m new to this type of ignition, only ever had points bikes before.

Hopefully the static setting is close enough to get it started then as you suggest, I can have a go at the dynamic timing.

And had a bit of luck on eBay this afternoon.

Managed to win a used plate used to measure gearbox shaft end play.

Looking at the photos, I think was a Flatracer version.

Apparently only used once so it should do the job for me.

You’ve probably got them somewhere but I’m not seeing the snap ring or the oil baffle plate.
I’m guessing also that you have the kicker shaft, spring and spacer?
You could of course leave the gear off?
The chances of actually using it are slim to none as they are crap.

Thanks Mikey.

The gearbox cover has the kickstart mechanism and lever fitted.

I agree it’s unlikely to get used but it would offend my OCD if I couldn’t at least use to ease the engine over.

Another pic of the input shaft

There should be another circlip groove hidden under the components assembled.
As a by the by,The seal in the end of the top hat is fitted upside down.
I’m still seeing wear on the primary gear😆
Mikeyboy, your expertise is priceless 👍

I know these are a bit Marmitey but I got some aftermarket choke pulls today.

Once fitted, I am ready to attempt the first fire up attempt of this bike after a long lay off, completely disassembled in a garage loft.

The next post will either be really great news

Or not

Hopefully the former

Just digging out the remote fuel supply and getting ready for an attempt over the weekend

Choke pulls fitted and carbs clamped in place.

Carb sync eyeballed for the time being.

And here she sits, battery on charge waiting for a start up attempt.

But not today though as the rain is quite grim

Couple of photos from a lovely sunny Sunday morning

I can report that it lives.

Started up readily on the second press of the button and quickly settled into a nice idle.

Shame you can’t post videos.

Really chuffed but now the hard work really starts.

The forks need a rebuild and the only fluids are in the engine.

I need to flush the petrol tank out - hence the use of a remote tank in the pics.

I also need to get the gearbox finished or it’s not going anywhere.

That and the engine needs to be dynamically timed and the carbs properly sync’d.

Right now though, I’m just enjoying the moment and reflecting back to February when it was a giant pile of disparate parts rescued from many years languishing in a garage loft.

Work on the G/S project stopped for a while.

Once I got it running I was approached by someone interested in buying it as it stood.

This was a tough call as the offer was, in my opinion a good one, but somehow didn’t sit right with me in the circumstances of the projects acquisition.

To cut a long story short, I’ve decided I’m going to keep it and finish it.

Just a small but fiddly job today - to fit a new petrol tap and connect up some fuel lines.

This seemingly simple job made all the more fiddly as I had to move the airbox back a bit to run the hose through over the top of the gearbox.

And here we are

The external fuel filter is really just for insurance.

The tap has an integral internal filter and the inside of the tank looks clean from what I can see.

Thought the external filter prudent after the expense of having the carb bodies professionally cleaned.

It’s not the prettiest thing and can be removed and plumbed out once I’m confident in the tank.

The pesky gearbox is the last big ticket item now.

Really must get this sorted

I don’t have the skill or correct tools to progress my sick gearbox so I made an appointment and took it see Dr Mikey yesterday at his Melton Mowbray surgery.

The initial diagnosis wasn’t good and major surgery is required.

However I’m assured the long term prognosis is a full recovery - thanks Dr Mikey

Looking forward to the patient being able to convalesce back in the frame.

Thanks for the advice and tea Mike
