Hi, I recently bought a new GS and its just upto the 600 mile mark. The gear box is quite clunky, I expected to have a degree of clunk but not sure if this is normal. There is also a fair amount of rattle low down when the engine is warm, is this a normal sound and lastly on deceleration theres a fairly frequent backfire. I will obviously check this out with the dealer but can anyone say whether these things are normal. I love the bike, its great to ride and a great change from the Varadero before!:blagblah

Sounds like you have a good one.

Clunky gearbox is quite the norm as is the back popping on deceleration, I wouldn't call it a back fire, just a lovely pop pop pop what you get from a twin.

I was on the Island for a week recently on mine visiting family, where did you buy your bike from ?

Thanks

Thanks for the info. Bought from Bahnstormers Alton. There is unfortunately no dealers on the Island despite an increasing number of bms. Very please with the bike but will take time to get used to the quirky sounds. Cheers

Why does it go Pop Pop? What is actually causing the pop?

My previous 1200 did that but my current one doesn't?

And from a good dealer to, Bahnstormers are top notch :thumb2

At first service when throttle bodies and valves are adjusted it will be much smoother oh and dont forget to let them know to adjust the rocker arms for the valves as well. It makes for a much quieter engine. as for the gearbox it should only do this when engaging 1st gear when stationary but this improves with miles as well. The poping sound of the exhaust you have to live with it unless there is a lick in the joints somewhere

It's the popping of the pop pop valve, introduced as part BuMW's continuous drive towards product improvement.

For precise information on model features, the exact level of equipment, and in the case of approved used BMWs, current mileage details, please contact your BMW Dealer. Design, equipment and mileage are all subject to change.

Dont worry about it. They all do that............along with the final drive going bang, electrics going pop and you may get lucky and have it spontaneously combust :augie Enjoy.

Well thats answerd my questions well and truely, thanks to one an all. Very glad to hear Bahnstormers are top notch. Riden bikes for decades and thus far the GS is just great, better than chocolate! Thanks again.

The popping can be fairly & squarely planted at arse***** in Brussels & Strasbourg (nice city Though)
It's to do with the fueling cut of & mixture setting to comply with Euro III emission regs ....

Don't worry about it it's suppose to do it .... if you think the Beemer is bad you try owning a Guzzi .... it's downright embarrassing!!

If you think it's bad now you don't want to know what Euro4 is going to bring

Regards

My 1200 is on around 800mls now.
Going from neutral to first is just a slight click, going up the box is super smooth, going from 6th-5th-4th again very smooth 4th-3rd-2nd-1st a slight clunk.slight blip of the throttle before changing down does improve it.
In general the box feels very nice to me.
But i did have an 1150:augie

Sounds like you got lucky and found a sweet one

Yes they do indeed all do that Sir!
BMW developed these 'quirks' after extensive colaboration with Massey Ferguson!:thumb2

Shame, will be away with work. Had the service done and things are definitely improved, didnt realise the run in oil is different from normal which may account for the odd sound. Let me know if you visit again.

I am coming to the Island again for 3 days on 1st Dec if you want to compare clunkiness !!

Shame, I will be away. Let me know next time you are over. Watch the ferry prices, daylight robbery. Wightlink seem the best if booked online in advance. Since service there is some improvement, less clunk but not clunkless. Much better and a great bike just the same. The loan bike of 5000 mls was smoother but I guess my time will come.
