New R1200 Gs Rally, slipping down a gear problem!

Hey all, i seem to have a strange problem on my new GS rallye, basically when i change up a gear it sometimes slips back down to the gear i changed from. Now this has happened over 30 times in the first 600 miles and seems to happen more from 3rd to 4th and at high revs, however it has happened in other gears and at lower revs.
The clutch lever is free and not catching, i am consciously being positive in my changes, in fact i have moved the gear selector round a tooth to bring it closer to my foot. I am not an inexperienced rider and have owned 3 other GS's in the past and this hasn’t happened before. Also i am not aware if the gear selector shows the changed gear or it is blank before it slips.
So when i took her in for her first service at vines i mentioned it to the guy there, he said he isnt aware or heard of any similar faults for the R1200 GS. Anyway the mechanic took it for a long 6 mile ride in central London and couldn’t emulate the fault!, no surprises there, or maybe it is just me?

Snap, 3 year old 5000 mile bike I collected recently. It slips back into third from fourth just after changing up. It never slips back when under way or when changing down, Its mainly when accelerating up through the gears.
The dealer also said this is not a usual problem.
I have lubed the shaft thorough the frame and both universal joints on the shift link but its made no difference.
I suspect the gear change quadrantent (No9) is not roating quite enough for the plunger (13,14,15) to engage in the cam, perhaps this will become slicker when better run in.
I now keep my toe on the lever when changing up to 4th until I apply power, I also make the move very slowly, no flicking with the toe like on most gearboxes. (I still forget occasionally and it still slip)
Its not very good, I'm still debating making more of an issue about it, I have 10 month warranty left.
 
I've had similar to you on my GS TB which I collected a couple of weeks ago. It's only got 400 miles on it so far due to being away.

I find when accelerating up through the gears, making progress if you will, that it sometimes goes back from 4th to 3rd. Like you I've never noticed what happens on the gear indicator until after it has change, hence knowing which gear it has moved to.

I'm running in an RT at work at the moment, & it does it if I am less than 100% firm in engaging the next gear. To be fair, most of our 1200's do it at first to a degree.

I don't know whether it gets better with time, or whether I consciously change gear in a more positive manner, but it does seem to improve after a while.
 
For the attention of iandavid:barf. Iv also got a RALLEEEEEE Special Edition. Celibration of the Pari Dakar Ralleeeeey Top of the Range G.S. Fully optioned kitted out, plus engine crash bars plus spot lighted. All of which was fitted free of charge. I presume you have bought one of those Pre. Free 1800 pound plain ordinary standard GS THINGIES . Well as they say in the Polish Army (TUFFSKI SHIZZKI) :jager:comfort:toungincheek:pullface. Right back to the problem Thingy. Iv just bought a R1200.GS.Ralley. And im having an intermittant problem of when changing down, the gear lever tends to take a few seconds to return. Im putting it down to being new but i will report it on first 600ml service. Any helpfull advice from iandavid. Shove it mate. :pullface. Right im off for a ride on my special edition Ralley GS.
 
Got mine new last year and exactly the same problem on the up change from 3rd to 4th. mentioned it at first service but nothing done.

On the first annual service the gearbox oil was changed (the dealer refused to do it at 600 milers) and the problem has stopped .

You still need to make a more positive change between 3rd and 4th than any of the other shifts

Strange it feels different to previous GSs you have ridden - were any of them the latest model ? If not perhaps you could try their demonstrator to see if you experience the same problem which would prove whether it's you or the bike
 
I'm new to the GS so I don't make any allowances for it's little quirks yet. I've only ridden 2 GS1200s, one test ride demo bike and the one I own now, but both had very slick gearboxes. Much better than I expected and the change feels just like an average chain driven bike- more Honda than Suzuki or Yamaha.

You should persist, a new bike shouldn't be like that.
 
Had my GSA for a year now, no issues with the gears at first. Then I bought new boots (big heavy off road boots replacing very light racing boots) and its slipped gears a few times.

Turns out I either wasnt engaging the gears properly or was touching the lever unconciously because of my new heavy boots.

So nothing wrong with the bike, rider error :blast
 
I too have a new Rallye and it is coming up for its first service. I have not had this problem. The only issue I have had with the gear box is that it is sometimes a bit fussy about selecting first gear. I assume that this is because I am a bit old fashioned and bring the clutch in before starting up. I know this is not necessary on the GS but it is a practical safety issue just incase there is a false neutral. The problem is cleared by selecting the gear (which it sometimes refuses to do) let out the clutch then bring it in and select again now it works! Something I can live with though.
