No they don't - they can zap every car the comes along the road, so long as they suspect that there is speeding on that bit of road.
And think about it practically. If you aren't speeding, you aren't going to know about any of this, and if you are, then are you going to run a defence that OK you were speeding, but the policeman wasn't to know that, so he shouldn't have proved that you were by zapping you?
Nearly right but not quite. The Officer observes the traffic coming towards him. If he feels you may be over the limit he points the laser at you to confirm his opinion. If you are under he does not stop you. If you are over he stops you. Your idea of a defence is unfortunately a non starter. Also random sweeping is not used with a laser gun as it would never lock onto anything, it has to be quite accurately pointed at the front flat surface of an oncoming vehicle.

It's not my idea of a defence - that's the whole point.
We are not talking about "random sweeping" - you zap everything that moves as it comes along the target road stretch, as it's virtually impossible to guess the infringement unless someone is absolutley ragging it. 30 vs 35 coming head-on is very hard to call, especially with the variation in vehicle type/size etc.
I've only used 2 types of gun, and they both picked up bikes pretty much just as easily as cars, even from a slighly oblique angle. Technology has moved on a lot in recent years.

You will recognise the phrase ' I formed the opinion that the vehicle was exceeding the speed limit'. This should be the reason you then use whatever method to detect the offence and confirm your original opinion. Challenges have been made against users of Laztec for so-called 'trawling' which is what you are describing. This is why laztec operators are now very selective about what they aim and zap at, otherwise they are not seen to be forming that initial opinion and could lose cases.
I agree that Lazers are effective against bikes. If they don't get the requisite number of pulses back they don't read. Simple - the recent rubbish in MCN has fizzled out.
Lads - PLEASE consider not wasting money on detectors GPS software or whatever. Why not read the signs? There are stringent rules for signing static cameras and mobile enforcement vans.Every static camera has to be visible and every site where mobile enforcement takes place must be signed with the camera logo. If you see the camera sign look for the van or the camera. Most roads are free of signs so when you see them they should jump out at you. All the info is ther for you - honest!!
As I understand the situation explained to me by the poliss imself . He was sat at the top of the on ramp on the 70 mph dual carriageway. Vehicles including yours truly are passing 'under" him on his right hand side .
As vehicles come into his view from on high, he sweeps the gun from right to left as they disapear away from him. He watches them pass at 70 and away they go , he then sweeps back to his lower right and trains the gun on me coming into view, tooling along at naughty speed . He sweeps his lazer right to left as I disapear . On with the flashers and I test the strength of my pucker string!
Fairs fair , I got nicked , but I would never have seen him as I approached the junction as he was on the otherside on the on ramp.
I got the impression he was constantly blipping the lazer gun off and on repeatedly as cars passed and he scanned their progress . Just thought some gizmo might have picked up the signal before I got there.
Incidentaly , I have never been nicked by a fixed camera , only mobiles.
