New rear hub recall and this is the result

Twin row chain running in oil with idler rollers to tuck it in close so it looks like a shaft drive. How hard can it be?

Oops. Couldn't resist. ;)

F*ck me it goes from bad to worse........The flange they re-fitted was fine, but now they tell me the final drive is bollocksed......£1275 worth of bollocksed. WTF??????

I've heard this more than once when the rear flange recall has been carried out, why I'm reluctant to take mine in for it to be done. If it was fine when you took it in I'd say it's up to them to repair it, proving it was fine may be a different matter though. Hope this gets sorted!

You mean they've knackered it whilst trying to do the flange replacement.
I hope they aren't trying to get you to pay for it?!

So let me get this straight you went in for a recall with no problems at all??

They fit a flange which has a defect and then your final drive is damaged??

BMW cost methinks! :rob :rob :rob

Tell them to fuck off, if it was OK when you took it in its down to them. Give them the chance to sort it and if they don't, get legal, its their fault.

And the misery continues....'sorry sir we can't do anything until Tuesday when the mechanics are back in after tossing themselves off all weekend looking at KTM brochures'............GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

This is how you sort it.

Get bike transported back to your house.

Phone Mikeyboy or pm him.

Send him your FD.

He will fix it and send it back to you.

Put it back on your bike, fill it with oil.

All will be right with the world. :beerjug:

Yup then send the bill to the useless bastids that fecked it in the first place !!!

Sounds like the it was a tight fit so instead heating and cooling the parts to ensure they fit without excessive force they decided to force it the fit and something had to give they need to get you a new final drive ordered to but right the damage from their poor workmanship.

I wonder if the cases where final drive failure follows replacement of the flange that it is the case of the drive bearings being worn and nearing the end of their service life. ( although if left undisturbed they would soldier on for thousands of miles).

Use of pullers and presses to remove the old flange then fit its replacement , perhaps with less care due to it being warranty replacement (knowing BMW quote and subsequently pay very tight times for the work) could easily lead to stresses on the bearings and associated parts which lead to either immediate or failure after a short period of time .

I would still say it is a case of pushing the fact that it was fine when it came in and push for a BMW goodwill repair, but don't hold your breath

If they are doing it correctly I would think there should be no stress on the bearings maybe MikeyBoy can confirm this he had done plenty its the hub they are changing nothing inside the drive if its not supported or handled correctly the forces might then be transferred to the bearings and worn or not they will then be damaged.

I changed my flange couple of years ago due to cracking (before the recall) using car hub puller draw bolt arrangement and heat gun. There is no reason to apply any load on the FD itself. Would be possible though to apply too much pressure with the draw bolt on fitting if not being careful.
