New Rosyth-Zeebrugge ferry

Just went onto their site to get a quote. Hmm... not very good.

Ifn you were going on their short break (2 nights onboard 3 nights on mainland europe) with 4 sharing a cabin it works out about £100 / person return which isnt to bad.

I priced it for our summer holiday for 4 of us return with car and caravan and it came back in excess of £1000. It cost us less than that for ferry / fuel for our 4 weeeks in france 2 years ago so it looks like a drive south again.

I tried a quote for two people and a bike, return trip and it was something like £65 for the fare. Then when you scroll down, it's £495 for the berth and you have to take a berth.

That price is bad enough but is there then a gaurantee that you have the cabin to yourselves or might you be sharing with two others?

Why can't these companies do things right? Rosyth is an ideal port for us up here but until the prices and arrival times on the continent are anywhere near as good as DFDS can offer then the run to Newcastle will continue to be a feature of my annual Euro trip.

2 folk on one bike over the summer = £1100 return. Newcastle here we come I think

Had to check that as I was thinking of something similar. the price it came back with was £645, still not cheap but nearly half of what you were quoted.

OK I've checked again and the site I was getting the price from was an agents and not through Norfolkline direct. Through norfolkline there was no difference between rider and rider & pillion, both came back at £370 return in total, not each, which is a bigger difference from £1100 and the £645 I was quoted from the other site. Got a bit confused so norfolkline now have this waiting for them

Sirs,
I have been looking into your above service with a view to the possibility of a short break this summer with three of my friends all of us travelling by motorcycle. In total there will be 4 Adults 4 motorcycles and a requirement for one cabin. Trying to obtain a price online has thrown up several price differences the main apparently is each adult being charged full price for the cabin.

Taking your price for the short break at £330 / cabin it would appear that the total price for us would be £40/bike and rider to a total of £160 plus £330 for the cabin, total £490 or £122.50 / person. However when booking online it would appear that the price is £370 / person, total £1480. Nearly £1000 difference

Can you advise on the following points.

1. Does the cabin price actually books the whole cabin or just one bed in a four bed cabin with the possibility of 3 strangers sharing with you.

2. There is no mention of motorcycle pillions and when changing from rider to rider and pillion there is no change in price, is this correct.

So I'll see what they say.

And here is the reply

Dear Mr. *****:augie

The cost of your trip will be as follows

Short trip = 1 motorbike + 4 passengers + cabin (return) = £370 (£460 Depending on dates )

Extra bike £35

Extra bike £35

Extra bike £35

Norfolkline.

It looks like the best option is to phone

The price isn't too bad if you miss weekends and fill the cabin. If 2 of you wanted to go you would still have to pay for a full 4 birth cabin

AndyT

Agreed. If you were going for a long weekend you could get the thursday sailing out and the monday return.

Very expensive!!!!!

Just trying to pencil things in for this year, so got prices today for 2/7 - 20/7 bike and 2 adults as usual:-

DFDS Newcastle................£288

Norfolkline Rosyth..............£555

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

So chances of Rosyth = zilch

We're no sure where we're goin yet, so it might be a south coast ferry yet - but otherwise it's Newcastle AGAIN.
Downside to DFDS is their drink and food prices are crap:( but "alternative arrangements" can be made:thumb

Cheers...........................Grizzly:beer::beer:

Norfolklines are obviously keeping up with Superfast's policy of roughly doubling the DFDS fares then George. It just disnae make sense to me.

I agree with you re the bar prices on DFDS. Thankfully, the bar area is dark enough to fill yer glass fae yer Duty Free when the waiters are out of range :D

Courtesy of some Googling, it seems Newcastle - IJMuiden is 491 km, Rosyth - Zeebrugge is 400 nautical miles (740 km) - about 50% further. I suppose that might account for some of the difference in price, but not a doubling. I wonder if it's that they want to major on freight traffic, since it's a lot more expensive to drive a big truck down to Hull or Newcastle than it is a car or bike.

Whatever, I shan't be bothering them this year.

If you are a lorry driver on your own you have to pay for a full cabin unless your company sends a few trucks at the same time.........madness
