Anyone tried new Schubarth Lid - full face without the flip front - I think it's called the S1 and it has the integral sun visor. They're making claims about how quiet it is.

Looks nice, haven't seen one in the flesh to look and stick over my ugly mug yet, tho'.

I saw the S1 Schuberth at a BMW dealer in Germany last week (Schmitz of Adenau). I had a chance to thus compare, with the BMW Sport Integral at first hand(noting previous comments on the Sport Integral re - visor/rain).
The Sport Integral,I believe is made by Schuberth also.

IMHO the S1 looked a far better helmet, than the SportIntegral, although the shell shape is similar.
The padding under the neck area was larger (thus possibly quieter),plus it had neat sun visor and a better operating system for it than the Schuberth flip front.
But the visor system is far better than the SportIntegral(looks like Schuberth were keeping this up their sleeve)
The S1 visor is larger in aperture, with a better opening and closing system (a la Shoei) and a better visor sealing system (to keep out the rain, presumably).
But the S1 is a far more expensive helmet than the SportIntegral and it really shows, when comparing like for like.Looks like BMW have asked for a de-specced version to price cheaper than the system 4.
Therefore I'm glad I've waited and not rushed out to buy the SportIntegral (unlike some poor unfortunate souls on the GS BB,who like me were tempted by it's seductive looks and let down by poor wet weather performance).
The S1 looks like the one to buy,but it's not a budget helmet.
German prices were -
Sportintegral 300 Euro's or £225
Schuberth S1 440 Euro's or £330
So reckon on a UK price of around £280-300.
Germany is no longer cheaper than UK,with the strength of the Euro, with BMW bikes now 15-20% dearer than a year ago.

Wunderlich now looked very expensive with a similar 20% price rise,so consequently didn't buy anything, because there wasn't anything I really wanted and I wasn't seduced by a low price.

I've ridden with two German blokes in the RAT club who had these S1's. They reckoned that they were indeed very quiet. In fact they said that they could ride without ear plugs on their Tigers with standard (NOISEY) screens. It does fit very snuggly around the neck thus keeping the wind noise out.
The down side is that the lining moulded their hair into a "M" shape. Made them look like two characters out of Dick Tracey.:D

That may be because the Mullet is still alive and well in the Fatherland !

Schuberth S1 Helmet

Took the S1 out for a test ride this morning.

The helmet is very comfy and the peripheral vision is excellent, much better than my AGV.

It is much quieter than the AGV, rode it for a few miles without earplugs and the noise was not uncomfortable, I reached speeds of 85ish. The instructions for the helmet do say that it will be noiser on a faired bike than on an unfaired one, depending on how the screen deflects the wind blast. If it hits the rider around the neck line then the noise will be greater. This I found to be true, I get wind blast around the shoulder/neck area. I tried raising my height a little so the blast hit me in the lower chest area, the noise levels decreased significantly, at 80MPH it was extremely quiet. Therefore, this helmet will be at it's quietest on a naked bike. As I said earlier, it was not particulalry noisy at my normal ride height, I felt I could ride some distance, at speed, without earplugs. I could never have done this with my AGV. With my moulded plugs in I could hardly hear any noise at all at high speed. There is an additional Noise Deflector that is available as an optional extra, I should imagine if this were fitted one would never need to use earplugs again.

Both the clear an the tinted visors have an anti-mist treatment applied to them. It was fairly cold when I went out first thing, and try as hard as I might I could not get the visor to mist up. Should I find that the coating deteriorates with time a breath guard is available as an optional extra.

The drop-down tinted visor (80% grey tint, a 60% brown tint is an optional extra) is very good and easy to operate. When I inspected the visor in the shop I didn't think it was particularly dark, so when I got home I compared it to my Rayban's and I would say they are about the same level of tint. I rode into some direct sunlight this morning and found the visor performed as well as any sunglasses I've used.

The clear visor is a very good fit, you can see it touching the seal all the way round. With my AGV I always had a cold draft blowing into my eyes, not so with this helmet. The clear visor is a doddle to remove with it's quick release mechanism. However, the tinted visor is a bit fiddley to take off and put back on, but then there should be no need to take it off too often.

The ventilation system is also very good. With the top inlet vent closed, the exhaust vents will still extract stale air (CO2) using a venturi action, this could be felt ever so slightly as a very light draft at the top of the helmet. With the top vent open I could really feel the flow of air around the top of the head, therefore it should be very cool on hot days when on the move.

The chin strap on this particular helmet is of the push-button quick release type. I'm not used to this and find it a bit awkward to fasten. This will probably get easier with practice. Reading the manual it turns out that the helmet is also available with double D-ring fasteners. The manufacture can replace the fasteners with the alternative type if required, for now I will just try and get used to it.

The helmet shell is a little larger than most helmets.

Overall, I am very pleased with it. I managed to get the shop to knock £39 off the marked price, so I got it for £290. No doubt if I'd waited a while I could probably have got it cheaper, but I'm an impatient sod, and all the Schuberth dealers are miles away, so I just bit the bullet and bought it!
