New Scottish ferry route

Courier today, 19th...

“Securing funding from the UK Government marks an exciting milestone for our project, signalling significant progress as we move forward,” he told The Courier.

“Our target for implementation is still set for the fourth quarter of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027.”

Ahh, I see now. Its going to by DFDS. Look forard to seeing what they offer and the price. DFDS has shit old ships so not sure what they intend to put on this longer transit route. If its anythig like the crap they use on the Ijmiuden to Newcastle it will be fun.....
As you can see I'm not a big fan.
....and yes Wessie it will be ''howfuckinmucho'clock'' time

DFDS NCL to AMS is your usual ferry route to Europe in May but at £1400 for 3 bikes & a cabin return they are taking the pee so unfortunately it is P&O (we have not booked with them since their mass sackings) from Hull and £866 like for like!

Usually my brother and friend come down from Stirling, through the borders/Kielder straight to NCL but this time a little bit of A19 to meet me for something to eat at Saltburn by the Sea, then it is off over the North Yorkshire Moors and the Wolds to Hull. A couple of hours longer than to NCL but some great roads/scenery and we have saved almost £200 each before the extra fuel costs.

DFDS, the price they charge to take a motorbike has hugely increased, £140 - £170 each way. It was generally half that amount when I've used them previously. Cabin prices haven't increased as much if you pick the quieter days. It came out £300 cheaper to sail P&O from Hull in June.

Staggering considering the shite old Boats and cabins they are peddling..... Thieving bastards in my opinion......

or basic supply and demand theory

DFDS is not a charity or co-operative last time I looked

shall we nationalise all sea transport operations?

reduce the salaries of the executives to national minimum wage?

It would be interesting to hear what price is considered reasonable, for three persons, their three bikes, return trip with (presumably) a cabin both ways Rosythe > Dunkirk > Rosythe * in what is (apparently) a brand new ferry….. or do I have something wrong?

* Apparently a 20 hour journey, according to a post in the thread.

59 pence to include free Buckfast

I'm afraid cost becomes a secondary issue, certainly for us, when compared with the awful drudgery of a trip from Scotland to the south coast. OK if you have time to explore on the way, but not if you have time constraints which condemn you to travel on the main routes.
I've said before that living in Scotland has many 'up' sides, but the main....only really...'down' side is the time/distance separating us from the excitements of European travel....this ferry should help, even at a cost. If it ever gets going.....

That hits the nail firmly on the head.

If it ever gets going.....

UKGSer is killing it, before it’s weighed anchor for the first time.

I think we've missed my point. I am not referring to the new Rosyth Link which no doubt will have newer ferries (although still to be seen what ships will put on this route....) and clearly a longer transit time and therefore higher costs, although what put paid to the first pasenger version was clearly costs & time on board...... and therefore clearly supply and demand..... or lack of the latter....
I hope they can make this one work as it will provde competition to the DFDS version to and from Newcastle.....

My point and rant was at the DFDS Newcastle to Ijmuiden option which I find extortionate for the crap they are providing to their customers. No competition from the North East means of course they can charge what they want.
No Wessie, DFDS is not a charity nor are many companies last time I looked and it clearly a supply and demand issue but looking at the age of the ships on these routes - way beyond their normal maritime shelf life.....state of the cabins they are clearly taking advantage of a niche market. At the end of the day it will always be supply and demand therefore I chose not to use the DFDS link but go for the Rotterdam - Hull option where P&O have at least ugraded all their cabins, have younger vessels and the food on board albeit pricey is a lot better....

You seem to be agreeing with me which was a reply to your earlier grumble about the Newcastle route.

Whatevs!

I am prepared to pay a premium for the convenience of a closer ferry offering, in the same way that I am prepared to pay extra for decent cabins.
Grantmac is in 'the trade' and can make judgements based on his experience and knowledge of comparable services; I am not. He may well be right in his assertion that DFDS are taking the piss; I know they were going to replace the boats with newer ones several years ago but the deal fell through.
Whatever, I am certain to try the new Rosyth ferry as soon as it is available and bugger the cost!

Indeed!
I'd be interested to exactly what DFDS do on the new route and the prices of the same. It will be a suitable competitor to the Newcastle run which at the moment advertises itself as the link to Scotland BUT DFDS will run both services so need to be careful with their cost / marketing campaign so as not to harm their own products.
I would have less of an issue on the Newcastle run if they did something with the quality of the ships and then respectively the cabins and services especially when comparing Hull Rotterdam and even more so the Harwich Hook service which has state of the art ferries.
Lets see but indeed its going to be a case of what is available and what people are wiling to pay.
Another route will be welcome whatever....

Perhaps this thread needs editing to limit it to the topic, that being the proposed new Rosythe to Dunkirk route, without the confusion of other crossings (and any prejudices or otherwise) possibly clouding the issue?
