If youve not looked at changing sprockets then i highly recommend it , esp if your going to do any off-roading.

Changed to 15/45 yesterday on my bike and did a quick back-to-back test on the road against the missus's stock setup (16/42, will change heres later).

Throttle response is vastly impoved, hardly any snatch when you throttle on or off !!!

Few minor downsides (but nothing drastic). Revs will be higher than before,
ie
@ 70mph revs at 5,000 vs 4,500 standard
@ 80mph revs at 5,800 vs 5,000 standard.

This will also mean a reduction in fuel economy but thats np imho. Distance wise is np (where you going that actually needs a 200mile fuel tank ?!) and the minor extra cost is totally worth the improved response.

For me its the setup that BMW should of put on as standard...

I changed the sprockets on my 650 twin to match those of the 800 and also noticed a big improvement off road, but the down side was a real drop in fuel consumption over long distances. I was getting around 40 miles less out of full tank.

Every time I got to 50mph I would be ready to shift into 6th and then realise I was already in it! It certainly does give it more grunt at lower speed though.

Now I just put the smaller sprocket on the front when I do a day off-road and swap back afterwards. In future I will probably go for 15T off road and stick with 17T on the road for better fuel economy and comfort (a lot less vibes). With 42T on the back I think the adjustment at the back wheel can cope with the 15T to 17T range.

I had an 800 on loan last week for a day and really noticed the snatchy throttle. It's not so much of a problem with the de-tuned engine on the 650 but the lower gearing still improves slow speed when riding in 1st and 2nd.

I was also surprised how much difference the larger front wheel made. Heavier to steer than the 650, but I can see how that helps keep the bike on the line off road.

I switched the other way - I added one tooth to the front sprocket on my 800. The result is a more manageable bike in traffic as only first or occasionally second gear is needed.
It's also added an extra 1mpg over 200 town miles - I've yet to get it on a longer run but would think the improvement would be the same and also a bit more relaxing...

I have changed my front to a 15 and although it does seem to pick up better its not a massive improvement.

Where did you get your 45 rear from?
