New Starter fitted, now really hard to start?

Hi all,

Another issue with the Gs, it's being a right pain in the arse at the moment.

Starter and battery were not getting on (bike running fine other than that). Solenoid was playing up, so I stripped it down and cleaned etc, then put back on bike. Battery was not great so that was replaced, and made things much better until the starter started playing up again. So..

All fitted fine, turns over engine much more sprightly. However it's an absolute pig to start all of a sudden. It's almost as though it's turning over too fast? Once it does start there are no other issues - fuelling is fine, idle fine, all cables are seated properly. It's done a 75mile round trip today with no issues.

The only way it will start is with short sharp use of the start button - letting it turn the engine over 2-3 times maybe. Any more than that, and it just turns over almost wanting to start but it's just not happening. Fuelling isn't an issue and I've already tried different plugs (new) and there is no difference.

Any ideas chaps? Could the starter be drawing too much power for the engine to start?

Check your throttle cables are seated correctly both at the throttle bodies (its usually the left that lifts up and screws up the fueling)

and at the splitter box

If the throttles aren;t both closed correctly the mixture is screwed up and is a pig to start and backfires etc etc
 
If the starter was drawing more power than the system could support I'd expect the clock on the RID to loose it's setting. Perhaps an unrelated issue that has been developing for some time.

Check all the under-tank connectors, separate them and use electrical contact cleaner then re-assemble. Check all the earth connections especially the main one under the battery tray on top of the bell housing. A poor earth may mean that the voltage to the ECU or coils is dropping during cranking.
 
Just spent a while checking the throttle cables and all seems ok. Throttle body positions are closing up as normal, and the wires are all seated properly.

Next to check is the wiring under the tank, but it all seems a bit weird to me this.
I tried starting it again, and if you hold down the starter for few seconds it will turn over briskly but not fire up. Opening the throttle just makes it sound a little more like it's trying, but no other effect than that.
If I push the starter so it turns over the engine 1-2 times it will start say 1 in 5 times. Nice and easily.

It's not fuelling, as it runs fine once it's started.

Will check out the wiring next.

As Packer suggest it sounds likely to be relative to a volt drop when the engine it cranking.
Most likely in the earth circuits,
you tube how to measure volt
drops.

I'm not sure I'd know what I was doing with all the electrickery testing. Will give it a go though.
Where abouts are you Duckspeed? I'm just in Bramhall.
