A few weeks ago, stuck in road works, I turned off the bike as I knew we would be stuck for a few mins while the road works sorted itself out. When I turned the bike back on……..nothing. No idiot lights, like the key was not doing anything. Tried it on/ off about three times then it all came good and off I chugged. No further issues for weeks then yesterday the starter just turned very slowly and then started. I thought it was unusual as the bike usually starts well. I did a few hundred kms ams returned home. This morning, just a dull click. I had an ich it was the starter so removed it and stripped it down. All the magnets were smashed up and the rotor is toast so I’ve decided to replace rather than rebuild coz it needs everything. Now, there’s few versions on the market including the super dooper ND version at nearly 500 smackers, Bosch and the (un)faithfull Valeo. I know the newer Valeos have more secure magnets but what are your preferences? Any ideas/guidence welcome.

I have just ordered an Arrowhead starter from Motorworks. It seemed to be a reasonable compromise on cost, but I don't know if it's better or worse than any other. I was put off the new Valeo because Motorworks list it as now having 10 teeth on the pinion, rather than nine. I suspect the Arrowhead is made in China, but Motorworks guarantee it for 2 years.

Hopefully I'll have it fitted by Tuesday, though it'll take a while to know how good it is (or not).

Nippon denso…. Lighter, uses less battery, works!
Worth the outlay I think if you are keeping the bike……
But if you are not keeping the bike, just get a cheapie and hope it lasts til you sell the bike….

I’m never selling, I’ve had it 20 years and we are on the second time round the clock! I’m luckily to have other bikes to ride but my GS is the only one that I hate to be unable to use!

Well then, buy the best; Nissan denso starter.
I bought one for my ST when the original gave up, as I thought I would never sell the bike ( then sold her this year!)
I would do the same again if the starter on my Basic starts to give me problems. Easy enough to replace the starter and have no more problems.

Ride safe

I fitted the Arrowhead starter this morning, no issues. It works, with a healthy spin-up much stronger that the previous 30-year-old Valeo. I am happy with it; only time will tell how long it will last.
