Just had corroded cover replaced by BMW after warranty expired, which I'm very grateful for. I've read several theories regarding the reason that some corrode and others don't. The mechanic that did mine reckons that the cause is the silencing foam inside the plastic outer cover acting like a sponge and storing salty water against the unsealed alloy of the timing chain cover.
I have removed the foam, allowing engine heat to dry it properly and to allow me to squirt it with fresh water to dilute the salt. I can hear the chain now, but nothing like a Ducati clutch rattle!
Does this sound reasonable???
