Hi,

I've just bought a '05 R1200 GS for commuting and touring. I have a Fireblade which I use for the weekend but I'd like to have just one bike SO, whilst the GS is a fine machine I'd like to get a few more HP out of it and get rid of the 'Blade.

What are the options as regards tuning and what sort of gains can I expect? I know I'm not going be anywhere near the 160 that a 'Blade puts out but is an extra 10-15 beyond the realms of what can be done?

Thanks,

Matt.

Do some searches. I think the most common mods are: Remus headers (effectively remove cat), sports can, Techclusion unit (like power commander), new air filter and 'snorkel' mod.

You're not going to get anything near the blade, but you'll have a lot more fun.

If you are anything like the average GSer, you will spend thousands buying bling for the bike, making it heavier.

If you are anything like the average GSer, you might be better off shedding a couple of stone from around the middle, leaving the poor underpowered beast less to haul around.

Enjoy the bike for what it is, not what it isn't. :D

Defo agree with GSmonkey - don't expect loads more power with the above but you will get a much more responsive lump with a fatter midrange and top end rush(ish) :)

Loads of threads in here on the above mods, here's one for starters.

If you have not had a boxer before, also be aware that the engine does not really start to loosen up 'till you've got 5000 miles on her and will continue improving 'till at least the mid teens! This in itself make a big difference to the driveability of the GS.

Sounds like a good start, I know I'm not going to be anywhere near the blade just a few more ponies would be nice :D

Already enrolled in the Gym to get rid of a couple ;)

Don't junk the blade just yet. I love my 1200, and it does everything very well, but it isn't a sports bike. Despite what many peeps on here will tell you, if you are really in the mood, and there is an R in the month, and the moon is in the right place etc, etc, nothing can replace the performance or handling of a litre sports bike. IMHO perhaps you might look at insuring 2 bikes on the same policy ( Carol Nash ) and just use the blade in the summer. That's what I've done and the wife is about to do. You won't regret it.

+1

The GS is great for year round commuting and summer touring but going for a blast on my Aprilia Mille R refreshes the places other rides cannot reach.

It’s comparable to sh@gging your dependable other half, who does a quite satisfactory job, but occasionally getting to ride her younger better looking nympho sister

grief! Someone talking sense. What next?

cant find a picture of it but there was a supercharger for an 1150GS on ebay recently, it was the ugliest kit you have ever seen and I couldnt quite grasp why.

I suppose the answer is because you can.

keep the blade too if u can ,nothing but NOTHING replaces that banshee acceleration of a four rice burner,
