New to me GS1200 Rallye - “Must Haves”

It isn't bollocks at all.

Your static topple over didn't do any damage because of the engine bars. It would have had the same result if these bars had been removed, and replaced by engine covers.

You're upper crash bars weren't involved were they.... so they really are just for hanging lights off.
 
I own a 2017 GS Rallye and went for the following (essentials):

Mudsling to protect rear shock
Cymarc front crud catcher to protect engine casing
Machine Moto X-heads to protect cylinder heads
BMW Frame infills to reduce spray & crap getting on me
Touratech handguard extenders

* Rad guards not required as Rallye has them as standard

Everything else is personal choice, I went for Nav V, aux lights (visibility), Akra (noise) and vario top case (to carry essentials).

Good luck whatever you choose, just get out there and enjoy

How about just passing on your wisdom and leaving it at that? If other's advice differs, well that's just fine.

The topple involved the bike falling 'downhill', due to the lower level of the road surface on one side. The additional 'width' the bars provided overall, meant the bar ends, hand guards and end can did not suffer damage.

My bars had nothing attached to them.

Unless you were there and just stood back laughing at the farkled GS rider, as I can't remember anyone rushing to assist.
 
More farkles purchased today i need professional help I’m addicted.
Going to be spending lots of time in the mancave over the next few weeks.

That’s to me sounds a superb GS with all you need as mods

Beware of cylinder head covers, they trap water and cause the paint to bubble - if you must have them, remove covers and ACF50 the cam covers regularly.

Or buy a bike with waterproof paint !
 
I'm on my second GS LC (2014 model for five years ands now a new 1250) and would class the following as essential:

- Front mudguard extender (Chinese copies are just as good as the Machine Art ones)
- Hugger or Mudsling
- Larger screen if it's a standard GS
- Cylinder head protectors. Machine Art X-Heads worked for me when I dropped my old GS at a standstill outside a B&B in Switzerland :blush
- Sidestand foot enlarger. Much more convenient than faffing around with a sidestand puck.
- Tank paintwork protection.

Warlord's idea of fitting a pushbike chainstay protector to the centre stand is a good idea as mine looks like a piece of rusty crap after 5000 summer miles. Bigger handguards for cold weather aren't a bad idea either, although not needed on 2015 onwards models as much as the heated grips are actually hot.

Bar Risers

Big difference, small outlay

Whatever your taste, farkle it as you wish. If others don’t like it, fuck em

Personally I never leave home without a grappling hook and tow rope wrapped around my top box, one day I’ll need it in Sainsbury’s car park
