I was just wondering if anyone was heading over to the HUMM meet in ripley uk from ireland ,

are there any touring clubs here in ireland ?

Welcome to the site and to biking in general.

I'm sure you will find loads of people willing to tour with you at the drop of a hat.... mention food and you'll have lots of takers.

Did 670 km on Friday in the company of Grumpy One and carried on to Navan to meet carsqhere and cleared out his shed of GS1200 panniers. Fab trip, but a bit wet on the return to Cork.

yeah i could be into off roading im stilll tring to get the hang of it on tarmac !!, ill probably have to get some engine bars first and some half decent tyres !!
I was thinking of doin the BMW off road training in june ?!

can anyone recomend this ?

Welcome to biking!

In at the deep end if you are going over to Horizons meet in Ripley! If you do go over (yes I and a few others will be) you will become a born again itchy feet two wheel traveler and enjoy one of the friendliest and informative bike weekends going. Even the legends go...Ted Simon, Lois Pryce, Sam Manicom, Dan Walsh et al.

Book early as there is a limit but go if you dare becoming infected with two wheel wanderlust!

it looks like it will be a good weekend, if i can find the funds im planning on riding to oz next year, just the carnet could be expensive

im still tryin to decide what panniers to buy !!

would you now if there are any horizons eventshere in ireland ?

Hi and welcome Slim. I'm giving serious consideration to the HUMM event - it's a definite maybe.

The off-road course in Bunclody is well worth doing. You'll learn lots of new techniques (and get to pick up your bike A LOT) plus it's good craic

That's a shame. There's a bit of road riding back and forth between the sections so I guess that's the problem. I wonder how hard would it be for them to fit a restrictor to a GS650 or an XChallenge?? It might be worth asking..

I was looking at the HUMM site today and talked myself into registering. It must have been the pictures of camping in the sun (compared to looking out the window at rain all afternoon).

i thought they might be a bit more accomadating as i just bought a new bike from them, but Duffys think otherwise they say they are very strict

Good man on registering, i think it will be a good weekend, roll on june

Id love to do some smaller trips if the funds allow, overtime is in short supply

I think skye at the end of august could be manageable

Hi Slim,

I know the weather is a bit wet but you are sure to see the sky before August.

I recommend getting the engine bars sooner than later, don't worry about the airhawk until your ass toughens up, they are only needed for mega-riding, in my opinion.

Ask Tengiz99 who has an 800, he will have solved most of the issues by now....

Yes on the engine bars. I got the adventure spec ones, they work, full stop!! Dropped it twice and no damage to anything other than scratching the bars. Beefy and they look pretty good.
Would also consider a HID upgrade as the stock headlights are a bit underpowered in my opinion.
Agree with Bin, do some riding and you'll find your behind toughens up. I tried an airhawk after having done about 2000km and found I didn't like it.

Those are the only essentials as far as I'm concerned. Might consider a top box at some point, but I hate to mess up the clean look of the bike. No doubt at some point practicality will win out. In the meantime the Lidl tank bag is working quite nicely as a tail pack.

would you think a bash plate is a good investment, i was lookin at the adventure spec one and bars they look pretty cool

are the HID upgrades a DIY or dealer job ?

i priced the BMW aluminium panniers today 1275 euro for 2 panniers and fitting kit

ill stick to my ortlieb for while !
