On the contrary JB, I think BMW's design and marketing departments are far from losing the plot

No, in my estimations it looks rubbish Jonny. I haven't encountered too many real world adventure riders who add all of that extra weight to their bikes. TT (and similar accessory manufacturers) are in the business of inventing needs and beyond commercial value their stuff is next door to useless. Sadly, I've learned from expensive experience too. Give me the 'R' without all of that junk aside from a headlight protector and soft luggage.
