They look like stability blocks so the tyre dosnt move to much on the shoulders between the blocks.also when you ware them down a bit youll have more rubber to lay down ,bonus ???

But they will be illegal when that happens.
Wear indicators...? Most tyres I've seen have something like this to indicate that you're reaching the minimum level of tread required.

with any compromise tyre which we wish to use on road but also give us grip off road there must be for on road a large surface area of rubber on the road surface. Whilst off road you need block edges to dig in.
As stated earlier the raised portions in the channels are to stop/reduce the blocks moving and twisting under load whilst on road cornering.
i will be interested to get your feed back on how you find these Maxxis tyres in comparision to other tyres you have used.

measuring the tread depth from the middle of the tyre, slightly to the left in picture, even when worn to those blocks - it'll still be well over the legal minimum.
odd though -then you'll have half the tread depth and twice the unpatterned surface contact patch.

Not necessarily a "legal" minimum, as that could differ around the world, from country to country.

I agree with you - the tread pattern will change dramatically when it gets to the 'halfway' blocks ... it is a strange one -
Funny as I was thinking of going over to these from my trusted Tourances - which I've had on all of my GS ADV's ...
It will not reduce your mileage by anything as the tyre will remain well legal - it's just that the tread pattern will change half way through - as the previous posts suggest - more rubber down in the centre when the tyre is half worn - but less water dispersion in the middle when this happens - it is a strange one ????!!!!
no they wont,many car tyres have this feature usually at the edges of the tread,for mot purposes any tread which has a higher base groove than the middle part of the tread where the tread wear indicators are(shown on the side wall by an arrow at each indicator) is discounted for measuring for mot purposes.in other words edges can be or appear to be bald but perfectly legal.in a bike tyre in the wet we are mostly upright where the main water sipes are,so no wet weather traction lost.
